I dropped the tank down tonight only to find no build sheet. I kinda expected that since it looked like the tank may have been replaced before. While its down I will be able to paint the underneath back end and then replace all fuel lines before going back together. Probably also change the rear while I have everything out. Are there any other ways to get a build sheet? my dash is out so I know its not there either!

Oh well, Rodney, half of the time the real old ones are unreadable anyway. Joel said that sometimes they're under the carpet, but yours is already out, I think. This way you can make it what you want, and not worry about accuracy!

The gas tank is the most common area for the build sheet, but sometimes they're under the carpeting as Joel already was quoted, and I've also heard they've been found behind the dash or stuck under a seat. I guess a lot depends on who was on the assembly line and where each guy there liked to leave it.

They have been found under the seats, and even stuffed in the seat backs, behind the back panel. On a few '78s, they have also been found folded up neatly, and placed between the rear strut rod bracket and the differential. They have been found stuffed between the tach and the speedo behind the dash, and behind the pass side dash panel/map pocket. They have been found stuffed up inside the frame rails, which, btw, is what they do with them now. They started doing that in '97, when the C5 came out.
Chances of finding one anywhere but on the tank is slim, but it never hurts to look! I've had my '74 apart several times, and have yet to find any part of a build sheet...

There is a shield around the tank on some cars. Take the shield down the encases the gas tank, it MAY be on top of that sheet metal safety shield. That is where I found mine, unreadable of course.

I found one glued to the gas tank and one rolled up behind the dash. Would you believe that the gas tank was much more legible than the one in the dash!!

Go figure...
Bummer Rodney. I know they feel like a samll piece of history when you find them...

I've told this story before but I found the Build Sheet in my car under the carpeting. Trouble is, it was not my Build Sheet. Obviously the guy (or gal) who was in charge of distributing the Build Sheets that day wasn't paying attention and placed the wrong one in my car.
Anyway, the Build Sheet is for VIN 1Z878AS408371. (Mine is 408530.) I would be happy to send it to the rightful owner. It's in pretty good shape.

Thats too wierd! I think thats the first time I've heard of the wrong build sheet in a car.

So what's the story on the build sheets anyway? I know what they are but why did they end up somewhere in the car?
