well after this weekend and my son gets married i can get back to the vett. I will be replacing the original 4 speed with a 5 speed an will replace the old headers with new ceramic coated headers. Is there a way to replace the headers that keeps me from undoing every thing on the engine (everything seems to run over top of the headers).

YES ! no problem. Invert your vette ( ask a few friends to help it rol over on his roof ) and yep, there are the headers with everything now running beneath them.

Also easy to work is rolling the thing on his side so you can work standing ( good for your back ) but a bit more difficult as at that point you must stop the moment of inertia and not ending with the first case. Even then you can return to the side ( without help ) because now the gravity center is above his rolling center and there's a non-stability in this position. Therefore it needs to be secured at both sides because i have a friend who became sea-sick after working for a hour on his inverted car , rolling a bit side to side on the roof.

On the side there's also the advantage you can reach all things from both sides . Not for tuning because test-idling is difficult as you need a stair to go in/out the car.Of course, again, a friend can stay in there and start -stop it as you ask.Be sure to watch him ( or her ) and if he becomes blue help him out of there and recover for some time to again more natural color. Than proceed.

No, that was my fault because i had it side ways with the steering colum up and had to hang my friend strapped in the seatbelts .Better is steering colum down so he can rest against the door.Remember that driving in your garage and clearing space for the roll.

Another great advantage is the fact that after changing your headers all fluid changes are half done. Just refill still to be done. ( don't forget ! )

And be carefull not to let anybody playing with the free hanging rear wheel ( very atractive to most ) as with your posi things the car can go spinning on his center cap on the ground. Best security is to remove immedetly those free wheels above as i can asure you the first to come looking will be playing with them.

Bet you will also do the 4/5 speed job at that time .Very easy because that part hangs about work-bench hight .Some minor paint work afterworths is more than welcome counting the hours won in this way !

Now serious : ( what's that ?? ) :

i have seen on a oldtimer exhibition a 2 half circular loops witch had to be bolted on the wheels bolts one side and with a vertical spindel ( to be drivin by a house an kitchen drill ) . In this way you can roll your car on his side in the garage.! Very nice for those with bikes to clear the car ....   NO KIDDING !

hope this may be any help to you.

Vette(s): 1972 coupe/350 cid/mild cam/4 spd/20 ft. paint (looks perfect from 20 ft.), but it sure runs nice.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Howard,

I tried everything, yet I still had to remove clutch linkage in order to clear.....since you're swapping gearboxes, what's going a little further.

JR

BTW, right side was a cinch.

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!

If you put the car on ramps, you can remove the headers from the bottom.  It's actually easier.  Accessing some of the bolts from the top is easier, and necessary.  Yes, you will need to take a few things off to get access.  But if you are a bit flexible it's not a lot of things.

Be sure to remove the spark plugs first.  It makes the job easier, and you won't break the plugs.

Yep, sure is and it's called a SawZall. Literally cuts your time takin them puppies off in half. Your not gonna reuse them right? So who cares what they look like commin off.
Goin back on requires more patience and time. As indicated above removal of linkage and plus may be required. Just be prepared to be layin around for a while with stuff just dying to jump into your eyes!
