Heat Riser

A few years ago I had the true dual exhaust installed on my '79.
With this setup I decided not to use the Heat Riser Valve anymore.
I remember the mechanic telling me he used some wire to leave it in the open position.
 
Recently I installed new Heater Hoses and shut off valves. During this job I must have knocked off the wire holding the Heat Riser open.
 
The Heat Riser seems to rotate about a quarter of a turn. Which way will open it? Clockwise or counter clockwise?
I wasn't aware of this until I heard a rattle in my exhaust. I realized it was coming from the Heat Riser which was flopping around.

I looked at a '79 valve in stock.  Clockwise is closed, and counter clockwise is open.

The spring on the valve will hold it closed when cold, so moving the valve against the spring pressure will open it...assuming the spring is not broken, that is.(and also assuming your's is not a vacuum controlled valve...) They do make spacers for that manifold that eliminate the valve...Adams' Apple2008-09-11 09:48:47

Hey Joel,
It was a vacuum control valve setup. I removed the vacuum diaphram during the exhaust install. (Saved in my orig. parts box.)
I'll probably get the spacer for it when I re do the exhaust in stainless - someday.
