Vette(s): had a really nice one. sold it to a good friend. Purchased 2004 custom coupe in Feb. 2009 did not tell anyone here until August 2009. BAD I KNOW.
okay here is the truth, I'm 43 and have not had much luck, nor any experience in auto repair. Thought I would try this easy install of chambered exhuast system.
everyone siad it was an 2 inch system from mid america to all of the muffler shops.
Got vette in the air with out breaking into, even got pipes speratated from manifold, some studs came and some didn't, go figure. cut one side out (couldn't get the damn thing apart. Went to install new piece to manifold and now I find trouble.
New piece fits into the opening but the bracket for the bolts will not, seems the be about a quarter inch difference, turned it every way from sunday. Here is my question. Could I drive the vette to the local muffler shop, about a mile away,(about fifteen minutes of run time due to warming her up)with that one exhuast manifold not attached to anything or is that going to cause damage, I can reinstall the other side to make the trip and then chicken out and pay him to install it and be done with it. motorheads don't laugh to load I already feel like a putts anyway. thanks alot, happy fourth. Larry, if I'm reading you correctly, this is 3 sided piece that bolts to the manifold to hold the pipe in place? If you mean the bolt holes don't line up, it might be simpler to drill(or use a torch) new holes in the bracket. All that bracket has to do is hold the pipe and donut gasket tight to the manifold.
I'd be afraid of a fire with an open manifold, or no manifold at all.I don't know what this might do to the engine with no back pressure.

Vette(s): 1977 L-82 originally white/buckskin interior. Currently undergoing a frame-off resto. and modifications.YEEHAW!!!
Larry,

Maybe you can get it "good'nuff" with wire ties, or the old standard redneck fix... a clothes hanger. If you get it near where its supposed to be, I don't see how a 1/4 inch will hurt you for one mile. If you need some extra security, gei it tight, and then wrap a hell of a lot of aluminum foil around the gap. That will definately get you good'nuff.

Good luck, and happy 4th of July. |saluteflag|

not sure if I'm reading this right. However, my old headers ... shrapnelled for lack of a better word. One of the tubes completely blew out and there was a hole that went most of the way around the tube right next to the block and about 3" long. saying the car was loud would be an understatement. I experienced no trouble driving the car the 15 miles from where it happened to home and then another 15 or 20 to the shop, total runtime over an hour. However my problem was only on one cylinder. The biggest thing I noticed was a lot of BAD lightheadedness from the fumes. I wish you the best, and you ain't a putz, you're just not a Ken Styer! I've done lots worse...trust me(or check the forums...)

Scot! |cheers|

thanks. here is the plan putting old back on, wrapping with muffler tape and duct tape, drive to muffler shop in morning, opening wallet in afternoon, hopefully driving vette in the evening with the sweetest sound in town..... could be worse, could have cut both out. |no-no| |saluteflag| |withstupid|

The only thing you need to watch for is the heated exhaust damaging something. Make sure the hot exhaust does not melt something. It won't hurt the engine its self.
But as Scot said, watch for the fumes. They can kill you. Open the windows, remove the tops or drop the top. Lots of fresh air.

got the old back up, leaking alittle out of the manifold, sounds a little beefy though. No shop open today that feel into my schedule so still not fixed, maybe tuesday or wednesday. Here is a question. Will the new system effect the gas flow, air flow, what I am asking is should I or will I need to have it twinked alittle with the new system, making a run from pacific northwest on the washington coast down to southern Oregon in about three weeks, 400 miles and trying to avoid "THE PINK RABBIT THAT PIGPEN LET OUT?????? |wavey|

It can change the way the engine breathes, and therfore yes, the fuel mix should be checked and/or tweaked. It will probably be very minor.
