Does anyone out there use fuel higher than 93 octane? I have a station near my house that sells 110 octane which I mix 40/60 with 93 octane to make 99. A 350/350 (410hp now)runs really sweet on this mix, I would recommend it to anyone!!! The only problem is that I can't take trips longer than those that will allow me to get back home again on one tank of gas, which isn't far with a thirsty vette. How available is high octane fuel? Has anyone else noticed it for sale in their city? Any suggestions?
(If you're a horsepower junkie you have to try the high octane. I run timing over 30 degrees and the rush is fantastic with a built small block, I can only dream what it would be like with a big block. This is what the early C3's are all about!!!!!

You could always try pulling up to the pumps at a FBO (fixed base operator) at your local airport for some high octane fuel!
The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) has been working on getting aircraft engines certified to run on auto gas for years so it seems only fitting that cars should be able to burn avgas...!!!

With 93 octane the engine pings so badly I can't drive it without severly retarding the timimg. I think I was just born in the wrong age.

My car is a 80 L82 stock, with timing set correctly, it runs perfect on 87, but with a little advanced timing you must run 93. Only 9.0:1 compression though
thats me above haha

I'm still running the stock '69 compression - 11:1. I may be able to run 93 octane if I severly retard the timing but then it just isn't as fun to drive. I may start experimenting though just so that I can fill up anywhere and take longer trips. If the station by me stops carrying the high octane I may be looking at a compression drop because its beginning to sound like racing fuel is not all that common.

I have seen octane boosters for sale in many different places, including Pep Boys and speed shops. My 427 runs fine on 93 octane so I have never tried the boosters. The bottles claim to take you to 104 octane or better. Just add the bottle to a full tank of gas so you should be able to carry as much with you as you feel you need for the trip.
The interesting thing about octane booster is that I don't believe it boosts octane at all. It just coats your combustion chamber (and everything else) with a coating designed to reduce detonation. I tried this stuff and completely fouled a set of plugs. I believe chiltons even shows pictures of plugs fouled by octane booster (they're orange). Anyway the stuff is terrible and I don't understand how they can make their 104+ claims!! In short, it only treats the sypmtom (reduces pinging) and does nothing to help the octane level.
What's your 427's compression ratio?
Anyone else still running compression of 10:1 or higher?

Well, as I said, I have never tried it, but am glad you say it is no good. Now I know not to try it.
My 427s compression ratio is 10.25 : 1 and runs just great on 93 octane. My 93 LT1 runs fine on 89 octane also, but I put 93 in it. In the overall scheme of things, the price difference just is not worth worrying about.
