It's been a very long time since I had to have a dual exhaust system installed on anything and the ol' 79 needs new plumbing from the headers back. Any idea what I can expect to spend ?  Last time I had to install duals was on a 1970 Cougar and I was a whole lot younger...

'Round here, (Dallas,TX) you'd expect to spend around $200. That would be from headers back, depending on what type mufflers you chose, and what type of pipe material, such as carbon steel, alumnitized steel, or stainless. Carbon steel= cheapest, but easiest to work with, and stainless= $$$$, and hardest to bend/weld.

Last summer I had duals for the '81 done up w/cats from headers back. The system was custom made out of a heavy gauge stainless steel and stainless mufflers for $1000. Seems like lot, but it was actually worth every cent when it was done. That's my .02 cents.  I'm sure Ben has a better and more accurate answer to your question though. He seems the most knowledgeable one here on the forum about stuff like that.

MidAmerica makes a nice true dual kit. For the '79, you can get a
chambered system that some guys on here say sounds pretty
good

I had my '77 changed from the single pipe/split to true dual about 6 years ago.  At that time, the bill was written out for about $750, but I had them take a bunch off since when I had my estimate the guy said it wouldn't cost over $450.  That included another catalytic converter, Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, and chrome tips.  It was a really great job though and I know the guy took his time to do it, I just wasn't happy with how inaccurate his estimate was.

Is it me, but do exhaust shops see Corvette and automatically jack up the price.  Looks like it from some of those bills.  I've taken other cars in for dual exhause and never paid more then 350.  Definitly not the best of everything, but still seems pricey.  I had a shop do a dual system with cheapie tubos once and the whole thing only cost me 119 bucks.  I guess its who you know.

Depends on the material and if you can skip the cats...
Stainless is more then aluminized and aluminized is more then carbon steel... Have no idea of what cats cost... none of my cars except the 95 even has them installed...

My 79 is running "with no cats" and with Mid Americas chambered exhaust....BUT after tooling around in the car for a few months I threw on a set of flowmasters on the rear end of the system because it was just too loud...and too loud for me means its loud...(My 76 runs only monza mufflers no cats , my 95 runs without any mufflers at all..but with cats..

I just checked wonderful (lol) Dr Rebuilds catalog since I use it as "My refenrnce" and they list a complete aluminized system, pipes mufflers etc (from a 74..which will fill your 79) for $268... NO cats however !

you may need hangers etc and the installation is honestly not hard at all...

The catalog companies saying "for off-road use only" is simply their way of having a legal disclaimer regarding anyone using their parts to eliminate any emission parts from a car originally having them. It just relieves them of any liability should anyone do such a thing (now no one here would ever think of doing that, would they?)
