Had to take my car in for emission test today.  Since it's missing all the engine stuff, I thought I'd never stand a chance. But the cats were enough I guess. 2 years of not having to worry about that !

Man I thought I was gonna have to spend big bucks...now I can spend big bucks on other stuff..

Vette(s): 1979, 350sb, as my kids affectionately call it "shit brown" Corvette purchased in 1996. 84,000+ miles. Not a show car, but I love her just the same.

I'm soooo glad I live in Michigan and don't have to deal with all this emissions testing stuff.  They had talked about it decades ago, but apparently they figured our roads were just going to beat the equipment necessary to pass the tests off our vehicles anyway, so they dropped it!

I went fishing the other day and caught a pothole THIS.............BIG!

Congrats, Jim!
Here in Texas, cars 25 yrs old or older are exempt from emissions testing, so I haven't had to deal with that headache on my '74. My other vehicles tho..........

If I'd registered it as a "Antique vehicle" I could have avoided the test but then I'd be limiting when I could drive it....never wanna do that. Now, if I could convince the wife we need to move to Texas....

Here's what the Illinois law says for plating as Antique:

"Vehicles displaying these plates may only be driven to and from an antique auto show or exhibition, service station or demonstration. The mechanical and physical condition of the vehicle, including brakes, lights, glass and appearance, must be the same or as safe as originally equipped. "JimG38485.2765972222

It doesn't suprise me.  An interesting study showed about 3/4 of the car produced in the 20s met the emission standards for 1990.  The big issue is they could not keep it up once it left the production line, and created a lot of emissions very quickly.  Much of the pollution equipment is desiged to keep the cars clean as they wear, and maintance is ignored.

Cars in peak running condition usually pass, even with stuff disconnected or missing.  I have made many a car pass with nothing inside the converter, and AIR removed, and no EGR.  It's all in how well it's tuned and set up.

Amongst other things, I was one of the emission trainers for the state of Ohio for tech that wanted to be licensed for emission repair.  Ohio no longer requires the license, so I did not maintain my status as a trainer for no student.

I am so glad we don't have to do this testing in my area. I am sure it will make its way to me though. They are testing in the other big cities in Tennessee, just not Knoxville yet.
