Well we went for ice cream (again) and the car just smelled funny..(yes the wife thinks I am nuts)  I could hear a small hissing noise with the engine off..took off the air cleaner and could see the fuel bubbling at the secondary rods!  So the ol vapor lock is coming to get me!  oh and it's leaking out the drivers side gaskets..that's the seapage..kinda green or use your imagination or just look at the picture Joel..rebuild kit should be here by noon..wondering if I can fit a .5" plate in there and not hit the hood to rid myself of this nastey vapor! BLAH!  If not I can get a smaller spacer and wrap the old fuel lines..just wanted to keep it looking stock..

I guess I should put the pictures in..it's late and I am tired..

Get out the modeling clay and check it out Rich. I went with a 1/2" spacer and while I couldn't see a difference in performance ( no track testing or nuttin like that) the reading on my laser thermometer was about 16 degrees cooler than before... lukesvette2010-09-05 05:03:01

where did you order your kit from. I had all kinds of trouble with the kits I bought earlier this year. They didnt come with a spring for under my accel pump and someone had already changed the pump shaft so I didnt know I needed one. Finally after about 4 teardowns I figured it out. If you need help or someone to just get in your way give me a shout. LOL

So I got the seepage under control and it looks pretty and works great also..I still get the bubbling gas that I found comes from the primary needle and seat.. I couldn't find a store that had a spacer in stock so that didn't get done yet..I do have some header wrap that can go on the fuel line that should work I hope..If not I do have some play dough that will let me know if I can use a 1/2 inch spacer in there to stop the heat!  I don't really like the spacer thing but if need be it will get done.   Rodney I got the kit from Auto Zone..can't remember the brand but they are all about the same..I didn't use the accelerator pump because it did't have a spring around the bottom to keep it from failing..It did not have the spring for the pump either..I just used the old one as it worked fine and is easy to fix if need be.  I got the timing and idle set nice.. it actually runs better now.. Rich, the other option is a heat shield that GM sells, it looks like a rectangular aluminum sheet. They work pretty good as well... 

I am tying an old school trick my dad told me about..since he HAD many of these when he was younger!!  He said that people would wrap the fuel line from the filter to the carb with aluminum foil and hold them on with clothes pins! yeah I know sounds silly!!  he was right on how to install a hard top the easy way so I think he should be right with this one also!  Plus if it was a way that people fixed it back then it should work now and it is nostlgic..but I guess so is old underwear!!!oh well i will try anything once that can be changed back real easy.. Ive seen many cars in my younger years with foil and clothes pins. Havent seen that in a long time now. Hope that fixes your problems. Another thing we did was to block the heat cross over in the intake so the intake didnt get near as hot. But that requires removing the intake and then your choke doesnt work very well.

I did get an aluminum gasket that blocks the ports under the carb..don't feel like pulling the intake..still need to drive it with the foil update..should be fine.

Don't laugh about the clothes pins....it does work. I used to have a pic of a 66 Corvette that had about 30 of them on the fuel line from the pump to the carb. While everyone else was sitting by the side of the road with vapor lock, this guy was sitting there with the A/C running, saying, "I toll ya so...who's laughing now, ya smart arses?"
I've heard all of the "scientific" reasons why it doesn't work, so spare me that....I know that it DOES work. Perhaps it's all psychological...
Wrapping the line with foil should actually hold in the heat, but I've seen that many times, too.
Go figure...
