ALrighty... It's time to start thinking again about replacing the exhaust on the white princess. This thought process has been going on for 2 years now but everytime I get close to getting the exhaust, something pops up... |cussing| Brakes, transmission, distibutor... etc, etc, etc... The engine is stock without headers so I just want duals to replace the Y pipe. I've been considering having MIDAS do the work. I hear they do a good job and have some nice hi-flow mufflers too. Anyone ever have them do exhaust work on your vette? I'm curious...

Vette(s): SOLD - "The Toy" - '70 Convertible
SOLD - "The Beast" - '90 ZR-1 (#682)
SOLD - "Betty" - '28 Ford Model A Tudor
Sold - "BLKBRRD" - '78 Pontiac Trans Am
"BLUBYU" - '04 Coupe
I considered having them do some brake work right after buying "The Toy" 2 years ago, but opted for Tires Plus at the time 'cause they'd always done good work on my other vehicles.

Last summer I replaced the whole exhaust system myself from after the manifolds - got all the parts from Corvette Central. Other than being under the car for the better part of a day it wasn't too bad a project. But if you're doing something other than stock replacement it might not be as easy.

The mufflers that Midas uses are called Ravins. A little expensive for my tastes, but that's just me. It wouldn't be hard to do yourself, but I'm sure they will do good work, especially if changing from 2-1-2 into 2 all the way

I haven't purchased any type of mufflers for 20 years...What would you consider expensive?
What I should do is just drive down to Midas and get an estimate. |headscratch| The problem with doing the job myself is lack of time. I've got 2 kids which keep me hopping and a wife who works full time. If a job should take an hour to complete, it usually takes me 2 or 3 times that. I've got to plan an entire Saturday afternoon just to change the oil.. |eek|

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

I don't know how the emmissions are in your state, but sometimes a midas shop won't change 2 to 1 exhaust because of certain laws. You might have to check before doing this job, because if it has to be inspected, it might not pass. In Illinois, they still give an exhaust check on my vette, but it is only 23 years old. I'm not sure how many more years I have to do this. New cars have to get set up on a machine , but they only checked my exhaust pipes, Gas tank cap, and catalytic converter. |smile|

We have emisions here in Pa but since I have classic plates and yearly milage is less than 5K, it's exempt from emissions testing. I don't think Midas would have a problem installing the exhaust. Inspection is performed by a local shop so not problems there either.
The pipes offered from the main catalog stores, Zip, MidAmerica, etc... anyone install these on a vette which originally had the " Y " pipe?

When I got a price on Ravin's for my CE, they wanted $120 per muffler. I bought Flowmasters for $79 per muffler. Of course that's all I did was install the mufflers. Why not take it down and get a price, can't heurt. Also, see if there are any street rod clubs in your area. They always know who does great exhaust work and for a reasonable price.
Just an opinion

I had Midas make the rear "Y" pipe on my 75 and also new mufflers. They did a great job! The guy who worked on my car had a corvette also, so he took particular care in working on my 75. The pipe they made fit perfectly. I would use them again.
