Vette(s): White '79 Corvette. It's a driver.
I don't have the heat shields above the mufflers on my '79.
When I had the true dual exhaust installed I also put on a (cheap) seat of those Turbo mufflers from Mid America.
While doing the work, the heat shields fell off. I asked my mechanic if this would cause any problems and he said something like "Nope."
I'm happy with the true dual exhaust and the Turbo mufflers. The sound is'nt too loud and the mufflers give much needed back pressure for the L-48.
I've put about 6kmi on the car with this set up but once in a while I wonder if I'm flirting with disaster because the fuel tank is so close to the mufflers.
Any ideas?

There are no heat shields above the mufflers, just above the catalytic converter and a shield under the rear spring. One of the pipes near the motor/transmission has a shield, too. Without the intense heat from the cat the shields really aren't necessary. mkapp78792007-09-02 20:05:56

I took the one above the cat off when I put my exhaust on. Never had any trouble since the heat isn't being retained in this area with the header / dual exhaust change that was made.

Around the mufflers?   Did you ever have them?

You won't have any problems.

There was one on each side at the rear of the car. They were in crummy shape and just about fell of when we were removing the stock exhaust.
Who knows. Maybe they were after market pieces put there by the first owner.
Thanks.
