I'm going to replace what I assume are stock mufflers on my '71 with something with some sound. My local muffler shop recommended Flowmaster 40 series for $99 each installed. Are these going to be exessively loud? I'd like a good deep sound that you can hear when you put your foot in it. Whatcha think?

I know the voices aren't real, but they have some pretty cool ideas...

flowmaster 40's are what every kid with a mustang and every redneck with a loud pickup truck use..
there is nothing wrong with them... they are just the "standard" loud muffler..
flowmaster has quite a few other mufflers with different sound characteristics.
they have sound files on their website.. listen to all of them and decide.

Great advice about listening to the sound files on the flowmaster web site...
HOWEVER ... I own 64 72 76 & 79 Corvettes all are at this time true duals...and none have cats installed...
I can tell you for a fact that any one set of mufflers will NOT sound the same when swapped from one car to the other...actually they do not even sound remotely the same...
Honestly what sounds good on the 72 sounds like crap on the 76 etc...

Rednecks, loud pickups and kids in mustangs...Hmmmmmm. Thanks for the advice. However, listening to muffler sounds on a computer is about as usless as tits on a boar hog. I was hoping someone who actually were running the flowmasters could give me a little better idea as what to expect sound wise.

I had Flowmaster 40s on my '77 L48 with dual exhaust (with cats). I like the sound of Flowmasters. To me it wasn't too loud (That's why I'm putting side pipes on with the new engine!!) The Flowmasters are quiet at idle and sound really aggressive when you put the pedal down. Around 2000 rpm there is resonance inside the vehicle, but I liked it because I like noise. I like the Flowmasters a lot, put one on my F-150, and would easily put one on another car if i get the opportunity.

Yep, you guessed it partner. lol. I did put the Flowmasters on and guess what...Monday they're coming off. Too much noise. Sounds like I should be running on the dirt track. I don't mind loud, but these just don't sound good. I'll get them replaced free, which was nice of the guy. He mentioned performance turbos might be more to my liking. Anyone familiar with those? Thank God it's beer-thirty.

I put Mid America Motor Work polished stainless steel turbo mufflers on my 1980, $199/set. It has true duals also. It sounds wicked. Not to loud but real throaty. It turns heads when I go by.

Sounds more like what I'm looking for. Went to Hollywood Casino in Shreveport last night. Pulled into their parking garage, bumped the throttle and downshifted to 1st and started setting off car alarms Tad too much racket.

There is a difference between regular flowmaster 40's and deltaflow flowmaster 40's. The regulars are louder than the delta flows. I run the deltas on mine and really like it. The regular 40's are just too loud.
