I planning on replacing my 'turbo' something or other mufflers when I install the headers. They don't sound good at all with the new engine. I thought about going with the 40 Series Flowmasters, but would rather have something just a little quieter. Has anyone used the 50 Series Delta Flow? They're susposed to be tad quieter with less interior resonance. Anyone have an opinion on them?

I have two suggestions to offer: first, if you're going to have a shop replace the mufflers, ask if they'll 'audition' a couple of different ones for you. The performance/racing shop I used suggested that themselves--and it turned out to be a real advantage. The difference in models, in terms of their sound, was much more apparent that way, and I was able to choose just the one I wanted.
Secondly, I highly recommend Magnaflow. They were the hands-down choice for me, and I've read a lot of comments from other people who like theirs just as much. I don't know if they'd be what you're looking for, but if you can, give them a listen.

Magnaflows generally have a mellower tone to them without sacrificing performance.
Most performance mufflers do more or less the same job. Their construction does tend to change the exhaust tone. Flowmaster seems to have a great name for their performance but they are loud.
I've had both on different cars...the Magnaflows definitely are not nearly as loud and raspy. I guess it depends on what you like and want out of them.

Longhorn,
I put a set of Magnaflows on my '68. I'm happy with the sound, a very nice rumble but not too loud to p/o the neighbors.
They came from Corvette Central w/ all of the properly bent pipes welded on. It was an easy install & everything lined up right. http://www.corvettecentralexhaust.com/index.htm
Also, Magnaflow & Flowmaster should have sound bytes to listen to on their web sites, try there.

I've got Magnaflo's on my 350 and like the sound. They're not too loud, yet have a nice mellow tone.

i totally agree with SFVette- i bought the dual exhaust kit from corvette central with the magnaflows and they sound great! they are quiet on the street, but sound fantastic when you get on the gas. not too loud but really has a nice muscle car sound. pretty good performace too
the flowmasters tend to be a bit too loud on the street. people have told me that they dont last as long either. for some reason the rust at the seams or so i am told

Dang! Got a lot of Magnaflow fans out there.
I know I didn't want Flowmaster 40's again. Tried them once on the old engine...had 'em taken off two days later. Way too loud especially if your engine's running like
. The 50's probably wouldn't be much better either. The Magnaflow's sound more like what I want, deep, not to loud but can be heard if ya want to!
Thanks guys, I'll check into them.

interesting topic since i am orientating myself a bit too on muflers.
on the flowmaster site that 40 series delta flow doesn't sound that bad .. to my idea much milder than the first one of the 40series listed.
and uhh.. don't hear anyone about dynomax ... does that mean it is not the right one ?
ohh.. here is a nice article about exhaust science:

I would suggest going to a show and ask folks to fire theirs up for you. Muffler tone is a personal thing. You need to hear it on a vette with as close to your engine type as you can find.
I have Magnaflow on mine for years now. Straight sthrough design. They flow excellent, generaly quieter than most especially inside the car. I would change them but still haven't found anything that sounds better. I would like more of a bark like you hear with a Cobra engine but have not found a one on a vette without the added feature of the inside car drone (flowmaster). I have read that the chambered exhaust sounds great but I have not personally heard any. Best to listen to examples first hand. Muffler websites give sound clips but not many vettes listed for sound comparison.

I have Dynamax on mine and I like the sound. Just loud enough when cruising and at WOT they sound really good
