  For what its worth I like the sound of the Borla Mufflers that I used. I went from a 21/2" to a 3" exhaust and was really afraid of it being to loud. I have Turbo's wich help along with Cat's and a Bassoni X Pipe. As the Borla is a Straight Threw one would think it would sound like a Glass Pack but it dosn't. Richard... 

I've had an exhaust quandary ever since I got my '68. The build sheet says it came with"off road exhaust". I do know it wasn't a chambered system, so it had to have mufflers of some sort. I have a new system on it now, but it sounds almost too quiet for a 11.5 :1 Motor. I don't want to rattle the neighbor's windows either, but I've always wondered what this big block sounded like when new.

  Mufflers? Who needs mufflers? Straight pipes , baby!!!! LOL!!!

I prefer original equipment style mufflers. On my header equipted 79(black) and the catalytic converter removed 79(white) they are mostly quiet but loud enough to drown out the wife's talking! With the headers I think most of the noise comes from the front, not so much the mufflers. I do have what they called the "turbo" mufflers on the black, but they sound just like original equip mufflers, at least to me.

What GM called "Off-Road" exhaust was basically the same muffler as stock, but with fewer baffles in them. They really aren't that much louder until you stomp on it...then they really sound off!

Thanks Joel! So at least from an appearance perspective, the stock replacement should fit the bill!

Hey Longhorn check out the C3 engine forum under "An exhausting day" heading. It has some good stuff on headers. I like Magnaflow also. A full,smooth sound and have that "just right" rumble but will roar when you want it.

I have the Hooker AeroChamber mufflers.  They are a bit louder than other mufflers I have heard, but you can talk in the car with no problem.  Open the 4 bbl and they let rip.
