Today I started removing my exhaust from the tail pipes to the mufflers to the CAT. Next will be the Y up to the headers.
Some of the exhaust looked original, but there were lots of pin holes just about everywhere.
I need to buy a 9/16th deep wall socket tomorrow to get the pipes off the headers, then I will be ready for the new SS pipes, CAT-BACK and aluminized mufflers.
It was fun working on the Vette while the munchkins came for their candy.
Thankfully, the temp. was still warm, even at 9:00 PM.

I went with the aluminized system from Corvette Central with Magnaflow mufflers.  Install was very easy.  Only problems I had were the bung for the O2 sesnor was slightly bigger, and the AIR tube to the cat -- which still isn't reconnected!  Angry

When my speedo stopped working, my check engine light kept coming on. I have been told that it is probably emissions, maybe the O2 sensor. It came out yesterday and I will put it back in the new Cat, if it fits. Then we'll see if the light still comes on.

The "Check Eng" light comes on because the ECM doesn't have a speed signal, which will keep the trans from having lock-up...and will effect the emissions, timing, and fuel. You really need to correct your speedo cable problem...you don't want to put a lot of highway miles on a 700 with no lock-up...the fluid will overheat...not a good thing.

May I suggest Dyna Max. My system went right in without any bending and all of the fittings were sized correctly.

What did you do to the munchkins?

Joel- Thanks for the info on the Check Engine light. When I get it all back together, should be AOK.

Jon- I am buying a complete system, including mufflres, from DaveM that has been on his '82 for 3 years. He is getting sidepipes. Some of the trick-or-treaters were more interested in what I was doing than getting candy.

Went to Sears yesterday and bought a set of deep sockets and a new rachet wrench, so I am back at it Saturday.Clap

Sounds like fun, exhaust systems can be real knuckle busters. I bought a aluminzedstock 2" system over 12 years ago and am waiting for the day I have to replace it so I can go bigger and badder. Unfortunately, it still looks like new and I can't talk myself in to scrapping a good system just because.

I hear ya. If this opportunity didn't come along, I would have waited until the coathanger holding up the muffler failed AGAIN before caving in.

It also made it easy to decide on true duals and chambered exhaust.

This will be a win-win answer for me.

just got done replacing the exhaust on the 90. most of it was pretty easy but the way the y pipe bolted to the manifold made them a real pain to unbolt. hope you can get them soaked with some good penetrating oil as you don't want to break the studs.

ordered my system from two different places on ebay. was the best way to do it. got the front y minus the precats and a high flow converter from the one place and the rear y with low backpressure mufflers from another.

i was kind of hoping when i put the new system in it would be a tad quieter (wife says it was too loud and got to try and make her happy) but i feel it is even louder now. it  sounds great to me as it has that low tone rumble to it.

hope it goes easy for you.

Dave, I got a complete system from Zips for my 75, fit pretty well.  Suggest when installing that you work of course from front to back. A good floor jack and short 2 X 4 (as a pad) works well. Also suggest using those large sleeve clamps instead of U-clamps. They don't crush the pipes and work really well. Use the jack to secure each section as you move to the rear. securing pipes and cats as you go. Finial trick I found was fitting the correct twist in the mufflers in the rear to keep them clear of spare tire tub. Work them until you get the right clearance. Oh and be sure the heat shield is in place where the pipes come close to the differ housing. Gets hot there and boiles out the rear end grease. You may already know these things just trying to make installation easier on you. Thanks and good luck.
