I'm about to start my ZZ4 for the first time and I was checking all connections when I noticed a rubber hose that was not connected. After looking for a possible connection point and not seeing anything to connect it to I did some research in my corvette assembly manual. It seems the hose is to connect to a Fuel Vapor cannister that should be located just under the Brake Booster on the driver's side. My problem is there isn't a cannister installed and not evidience that it was there before. Confused The car an with the old engine before so the question is: can I start the new engine without it? Is it safe to run the car without the canister? Or do I have to buy a canister and installation parts and connect the hose?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...the rubber hose comes from the top of the gas tank.It is an additional vent source that runs to the cannister,which absorbs odor,so there is no odor escaping into your garage.It is my understanding you can run car with no bad effects,other than the stink!

Carl, is this hose coming from the frame, or is it hanging in the engine compartment? If it is not connected to the engine anywhere, then you should be good to go. If it comes up from the frame on the driver side, it is to the canister(which you don't have)...worked ok before, so I'd say leave it as it is, or stick a small filter of some kind in it to keep trash from getting up into the hose/line that goes to the fuel tank.

The purpose of the vapor canister is to capture gas vapors from the gas tank, so that they are not released into the atmosphere when you open up your gas tank. 

The vapors are stored in the canister until the next time the engine is run, and then they are fed into the engine to be burned off.
 
Yes, you can run without the canister, if you do, I believe you should 1) don't over fill the tank, thereby reducing the amount of gas vapors.  2)  block off the vapor line from the gas tank.  3) use a NON presurized gas cap.

The hose is comming off the tube attached to the frame under the driver's side and the hose ends up in the engine bay just under and next to the proporation valve for the brakes. I think it will be ok to run the engine without it hooked up to the canister with all that your guys have said about it. I don't have a pressurized cap on the gas tank and with the cost of gas these days I won't be over filling itLOL
 Thanks guys! I guess once I figure out how to connect my electric choke wire up to one of the the wires on the windshiled wiper motor I will be ready to prime the oil pump and start that beast up. Cross your fingers that every thing will work. It's been a year since I started this project.Dead

You can absolutely start the engine up without that hose being connected...no problem at all. It's apparently been that way for a while, so no sense worrying aboot it now!
