I took the carburetor off a friends 70 convertible and found that the thick gasket had burned through.  Although I can't prove it, I suspect that this gasket was professionaly replaced about 3000 miles ago.  We have ordered a new gasket and new heat sheild but I'm concerned that it will just burn again.  In fiddling around online, I have discovered that the intake manifold, casting number 3927184, seems to have been intended for a 300 hp motor (the sticker on the air cleaner says 350 hp) and the carb, p/n 7043200 was made in '73.  So now, my questions are these.  Is this carb suitable for this intake?  Is this a 300 hp or 350 hp motor?  Is there something else I should fix to prevent burning the next gasket?

 

The engine number matches the VIN but it doesn't seem to help me determine how much horsepower this thing is supposed to make.  Any ideas there?

I also think I have figured out the intake casting it is supposed to have and even the carb model that it should have.  Does anyone have a good website to buy them from?  I have searched for hours and can't find a price or even the parts at all.

Tell your friend congrats; '70 was the last year for the 350/350hp option.  Q-Jet is a 7040207 or 7040507 depnding upon emissions equipment; intake is 3965577 cast iron.

 

buying a correct numbered carb. Most of them are junk and hardly worth

trying to salvage. Avoid CHICAGO CORVETTE when buying anything as they are not honest!!!!!! Contact me for a good source and quality rebuilder.

 

I saw your post, and I also have a '71 LS5 with a 4 speed. I am looking for a rebuilt Quadrajet, done right. I've heard a lot of horror stories about the remanufactured jobs at some of the standard suppliers (who shall remain nameless!).

 

Which rebuilder/outfit would you recommend?

 

Also, I would need a tach drive distributor, does not need to be #'s matching, but in good working order, converted or ready for a conversion to electronic.
