Last week I was browsing the parts bins on ebay when I came upon a 1978 Q jet....discription was just what I was looking for.
I won this grubby little jewel for 41 bucks plus 28 bucks shipping. When it arrived it was everything I thought it was.......except for one small detail......it's not off of a 78. The number on the carb is 70452232814 which is from a 1975 165hp 4-speed.
Can someone verify this number and make sure I'm right?
Before I contact the seller and inform him of his mistake (and I do think he made an honest mistake) I need some info about Q-jets and their marvelous meaanderings.
The Q-jet presently on my car is from a 77 Olds with only the primary pull-off. The ebay carb I just bought has both primary and secondary pull-offs. I see in the 78 AIM that it shows both pull-offs on the carb so the ebay carb seems to keep me closer to home on my parts. I'm planning to rebuild it myself and have it replated (zink) so my restoring cost will be minimal.....about $120 including core.
I see no reason NOT to keep this carb even though it was misrepresented on ebay. I will chat with the seller about this before I leave feedback but I guess my question is......am I correct on that carb number and will the installation be problem free?
Any thoughts on this situation?

I looked up the numbers in my vintage '82 Corvette Chiltons manual.
It shows a carb # 7045223 minus the last digits of 2814.
It lists it as off of a 1975 165hp 4 spd. vette.
In 1976 all the carb listings started with 170XXXXX.
1978 listings are:
17058203- 185hp 4 spd.
17058202- 185hp Auto
17058502- 185hp 4 spd./ Auto
17058211- 220hp 4 spd.
17058210- 220hp Auto
TKO500 5 spd.

Rich,
It looks like you have been E-Bayed.
You're right, the carb that you bought does belong on a 1975 Vette with the anemic 165 hp motor w/ a 4-speed.
Here's how the carb's numbers break down:
70 45 2 2 3 (Carb Model #)
70 = Pre-1976
45 = 1975 Year Vehicle
2 = Non-California Carb
2= Chevrolet
3= Manual Transmission
2814 (Carb Date Code)
281= 281’st Day of 1974 (Julian Date for October 8, 1974)
4= 1974 Build Date
Check below for more info on carb decoding: http://www.recarbco.com/technical/rochester/qjet.html
Good luck,
Anthony
Thanks guys, great info....more questions....
1. Any difference between an automatic and a manual carb?
2. The carb came off a 165hp manual but will it work on a 220hp automatic without modifying.
It is my understanding that all Q-jets of this genre are basically the same, about 650cfm.
Thanks...Rich
I have this same carb on my 1970 L-46. I put it there while i searched for the correct carb for it. I have found the original numbered carb for it, and will install it on my car after a rebuild.
I think the carb works just fine, even though the '75 was anemic, it will bolt right up, and work fine for cruising. ( I can't wait to get the right carb on my car, though)!

Rich,
As far as I know, Q-Jet had the same mounting locations & should bolt up OK.
I'm not sure how idle solenoids & kick-down cables would affect the mounting. Some Q-Jets for different divisions have different angle fuel line inlets that may not allow you to use the correct angled fuel lines.
My '68 came to me with a Q-Jet from a '70 full size Buick, but it worked (except that it leaked down). My "current" carb is a 7029207 from a '69 350/350 Vette, but I think it's as service replacement.
I just scored the correct 7028207 carb for my car that is being restored now. It actually has the correct accelerator cable mounting stud attached to the linkage and it should solve the problem that I'm having reaching full throttle.
Good luck,
Anthony

IF the carb is truly for a 4 speed, it will not have the "button" on the linkage for the kickdown cable for the automatic trans. Therefore, if you have an auto car, there will be no place to connect the cable.
Can you get some pics?
Then again, since it appears to be for a '75, it wouldn't have the button anyway, as the '75 would have the 400 trans, which has an electric kickdown. Your '78 has the 350 trans, no?Adams' Apple 2007-12-27 06:17:36
