I have discovered a fuel leak at the rear of the car on the passenger side. Fuel is running off of the vehicle frame and down on to the muffler but only when the car is running. After shutting the car off it stops shortly afterward. I suspect a rubber fuel line is leaking but can't see up in there very well without a lift. The car is a '75 coupe. Anyone had this problem before?

It will be either the connection where the rubber line from the tank connects to the steel line on the car, or just a hole/crack in the rubber line itself. Could be either the main feed line OR the return line, but return line sounds more plausible, since it only leaks while running.
Gotta get up in there and have a look-see. Easy enough to change the rubber lines, so I would suggest doing that, anyway. Be sure the metal lines don't have a rusted out spot in them somewhere in the area, too, but my guess is one of the rubber lines has failed.

Thanks Joel. Makes sense that it is probably the return line as you say. I have a set of ramps that I can back it up on to for a better look. What size diameter are the two lines?

Main feed line should be 3/8", return line prolly 5/16".....but it may be 5/16" main with a 1/4" return....memory a little fuzzy this early in da morn....LOL

Thanks again Joel. I just ordered all new rubber lines. The two at the tank and the two up at the pump. Figured I may as well replace them all as they're over 38 years old. Not very expensive insurance I figure.

Installed the new fuel lines today and everything is good now. Dropped the tank down to check the sending unit gasket and overall condition of the tank. Tank was still like brand new after 38 years. The spare tire is the original Firestone 500 white wall and it still held air!

Good deal on the fuel lines!Clap

Please...do not EVER run that 500 tire on yer car. it's likely to explode any second. The only thing it is usable for now is show duty, and points. Ouch

Not a chance of that Joel. I have CAA (Canadian AAA) if I get a flat. I should buy another rim and tire to put in the carrier really if I was smart and put the original in the garage.
