Hi,
My husband and I are totally redoing our 77 Vette. We are now starting to remove the old gas tank and replacing it with a new one.
I was wondering how you remove the rubber pan around the gas cap. Do you drop the gas tank a little and then pull it out towards the bottom or before you lower the gas tank do you pull it out towards the top? I read somewhere that there might be a metal bracket holding it .... is this true? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There will be nothing holding it in but the tank, and the gas cap itself.
There is a small overflow tube that will be connected to the pan, but it just pulls out.
Unless it is fairly new, and pliable, it's gonna be hard to get it out from the top. If you're removing the fuel tank anyway, that would be the time to replace it, if needed.

Thank you both for your responses to my question. I do have a new one which I plan to install once the old one is removed. Looks like I will probably have to cut this one out since it feels hard to the touch. I'm trying to remove things as gentle as possible to keep since this car has never had anything major done to it since it came off the assembly line.
Thanx!

Once the fuel tank is lowered out of the car, the catch pan will come off of the top with no problems, so you should be able to save it in one piece. You may need to spray a little lubricant around the filler neck to help slide the pan up & off, but it will come off ok.

If you are going that far, you really should change the cork gasket under the filler neck as well. They do get old and crack, causing fuel to seep out. When I pull any of mine out, I replace all the hoses, seals, and gaskets. They are not that expensive, and you may never have to pull the tank again.
