Vette(s): 1981 - 59 Beige over Cinnebar leather. Edlebrock top end, 2200 stall w/shift kit, 3:55s, Mufflex maniback exhaust, nice stereo, 16 in AREs w/BFGs
Im having my qjet replaced w/an Edelbrock. This will sit nicely on my performer intake. Im gonna do the heads and cam at summers end.  Heres my question - Have any of you used shorty or block huggers?  ANy issues?  Any recommendations?

Thanks, Kevin

Vette(s): SOLD - "The Toy" - '70 Convertible
SOLD - "The Beast" - '90 ZR-1 (#682)
SOLD - "Betty" - '28 Ford Model A Tudor
Sold - "BLKBRRD" - '78 Pontiac Trans Am
"BLUBYU" - '04 Coupe
When redoing the exhaust on "BIGBRRD" (our '78 TransAm)  I first tried regular long tube headers.  But after getting two sets that were screwed up from a fitment standpoint I went with shorty headers.  At a local muffler shop recommended to me I had down pipes custom made to contact to the rest of the exhaust system.

I'm sure there will be someone who will supply a more technical reply, but my decision was based more on ease of installation and access below to oil filter and starter rather than performance.

I went with long  style coated hookers, no fitment problems, my thought on block huggers are good to look at, easy to install, do you make more HP with them, Ermm maybe.

I have block hugger headers in a different car...not my Vette.  I think for general driving and performance they're a good compromise.  Full length headers do have fit problems plus low ground clearance.  You're not giving up much in top end performance for a street car.  If you want all-out performance, then go with full length headers.

Whichever you decide to go with, get ceramic coated or some other coating to reduce heat and to keep them from rusting.

I am running full length Hooker ceramic coated headers. No fitment issues but the collector flange does reduce the ground clearance some.

dont mean to hijack your thread kevin but can i ask a question also?
to those of you that have installed shorties, did you have to "ding" the one tube to miss the steering box?
i dry-fit a pair to my car and the steering box was in the way.

I would suggest you buy Made in the usa,  you don't want to hammer on a set of coated headers  Thumbs Down

There are several companies making block huggers that bolt right up to your stock exaust pipes, meaning, no welding and few fitting issues. I found a pair in Summit from "Patriot" ceramic coated for about $250.
