Anything, but Stock and more mods to come!
SSBC Force 10 Brakes, 3.73, TH350, 355 CID, Rack and Pinion, Vette Brakes suspension front and rear.
Here is something I found strange while I was helping longhorn with some part numbers he might need for some carburetors.
It may be a print error on our part here at Holley, but in our reman catalog they show a replacement carburetor for a 1971 Corvette with a 402CID engine. Is that right? Was there ever a Corvette with a 402 Engine. Maybe our catalog meant to say 454. We also show a listing for a Impala, camaro, and chevelee with a 402.

thats an error
no listing in any books ive got
Shark,
I agree with Ben about the error.
I believe that the 402 a lesser known name for the 396.
While searching for my Vette, I found a '68 BB for sale that had what the owner called a "402." He stated that the motor (NOM) had come from an early 70's Chevelle and that 402 was the actual displacement of the 396.
If so, it's my guess that they were probaly refering to the Chevelle (not sure if the 396 was offered in the Camaro).
I think the one and only year that a Vette had the 396 was 1965.
My 2 cents,
Anthony

Late 60's, my mom and dad drove an impala with, what I remember as a 402, It was printed on the air cleaner. My friend's mom drove a buick wildcat with a 4-something printed on the air cleaner. I just remember looking at the air cleaners as kids. "Strange listing", "stranger flashback"
Any way just my 2c's
MIkey and his "beast" project.

OK. I am going to try and jog my memory here. This all goes back to the 396 days, before the 454. I will start with 1969, and as many of you know, the 396 was in cars before 69.
In 1969 and a couple years previous, the 396 came in different versions, and for different cars. Lets look at the "B" body, Chevelle for 69. There was the
396/325 HP hydraulic lifters, then they bumped the cam for a 396/350 HP, hydraulic lifters, then the third option was the L-78, 396/375 HP, solid lifters. These were the "Rat Motors". Small blocks were the "Mouse". But, in the Corvette in one year, the 396 was rated at 425HP. Was that 1965 ?
Then in 1970, Chevrolet came out with the 454. That was another complete range of HP modes.
You could still check off 396 on the order form, but in 1970 the 396 was actually a 402. The muscle car's did not wear a badge stating SS402, it still was identified as a 396. In 1970 You could still order an SS396 or the brute, the SS 454. Marketing, the marque I.D., etc., was still represented as 396, and as in the Chevelle, SS396. The bowtie guys were not going to market any "SS 402". The SS396 and the SS454 were two different options.
I believe, and I am going from memory, they started to de-tune the SS454 in 1971. But that 1970 SS454 - 450HP, if you had one, and you could get it to hook up out of the hole, properly tuned, it would turn high 12's right off the showroom floor. Maybe some others could add their knowledge here. Also, did you know that Chevrolet had a 400 c.i. small block?
There are so many variations here, in 69 you could get a Nova with the 396/375 HP, but I don't think you could
in 1970.

Boatman,
After doing a little window shopping I found this '65 Vette.

The cars that I found from 1966 had a 427.

'65 was the only year Chevrolet installed a 396 in a Corvette. Starting in '66 the 427 was installed. The 454 came along in '70. The 402 was never offered in a Vette, not that someone may have installed one themselves.
A friend I worked with years ago had a '70 Chevelle SS396 cowl induction coupe. It had a 402 installed. I remember that car could turn its tires blue in any gear.
The 400 small block was essentially a sedan and station wagon engine...not a performance engine.

I learned a valuable lesson about 402s when I built my '69 Chevelle drag car. It is basically a bored 396, but there are some other minor differences. The 402 was mostly used in the larger Chevy cars, and most of the big block pick-ups from 68-72 actually had 402s in them. My 72 Chevelle SS also came from the fact. with a 402. GM never put one in the Vette for sale.
