Adams' Apple said: I learned a valuable lesson about 402s when I built my '69 Chevelle drag car. It is basically a bored 396, but there are some other minor differences. The 402 was mostly used in the larger Chevy cars, and most of the big block pick-ups from 68-72 actually had 402s in them. My 72 Chevelle SS also came from the fact. with a 402. GM never put one in the Vette for sale. ![]() ![]() |
ive also read the 402 (396 bored .030) was sold as the 396 because GM policy stated that you could not put an engine over 400 cid in a passenger car at some point.....
the vette and trucks were exempt... but i think every other car had to be 400cid or smaller..

Hey Ten15 - 70 G's for that 65 ? That was the price I saw, did you see the final bid price? The 396 in the 65 Vette was the designation L78 in the Chevelle. It was rated at 425 ponies in the Vette, and 375 in the B body.

WOW.....!
$70G and the reserve was not met! Someone's been watching too much Barrett-Jackson.
I know that '65 was the only year of the 369 & I think it was the first year of all disc brakes, but that's crazy.
Too much $$$ for a workin' man's salary, makes me love my '68 even more.

Well then again, an engine is an engine back then no matter how you cut it. Youc an use Vette parts on a camaro and vise versa. The only thing that is different (depending on teh cars) is the compression ratio. But I didn't know a name for the 396 was a 402? How does that work? Your missing a 6CID gap!

Louis, there were a lot of 396s. Then they made a slightly larger 402, which was externally exactly the same. The 396 had a great reputation, so they just kept calling it the 396 in advertising, but it was really 402
