Hi All,
New to the forum and a first time Vette owner!

I have an early production 1969 427 390hp with the quadra jet four barrel. The Accelerator cable was freyed so ordered a NOS GM. My issue is the end that connects to the carb is different. My carb linkage has a flat stud with a clip to hold the cable on. Cable has been modified by someone by soldering a regular round wire connector to the end. (that's probably what started the freying). It slips over the stud then the clip goes on to hold it there. The new cable has a fitting on the end that is supposed to clip over a ball stud. I ordered a ball stud to replace the flat stud thinking screw the old one off and put the new one on. But the old flat stud appears to be permanently attached to the linkage. Do I just grind it off?
Also, it looks like the cable is about 1/2 inch or so longer on the new one! (maybe that's why the old one was cut off and the end soldered on?) I've got the clamp as far forward on the cable jacket as possible. Now thinking I may have to bend the gas pedal lever rod to take up the slack?
Has anyone ever seen this before? Should I have a ball stud on the carb in the first place? Could that be a sign that it's not the original carb?
Thanks
Kev

I would suspect that some where along the line the carb has been replaced which has the linkage setup from 75 to 81. I believe their is only three options for accelerator cables 1968-73, 1974, 1975-81 75 to 81 use the round eyelet end 68 t0 74 use the ball end.
Do you have the numbers from the carb or a picture of the linkage setup here is a picture of the 68-73

That appears to be a Service part number....as in a replacement, or over the counter replacement. Definitely does not appear to be original to the car. Probably a '75 - '77 era carb.
If the carb works ok, you can certainly grind the stud off, then drill out the rest for the hole you need for a bolt on stud.
As far as the cable....what part of the cable is too long? The outer sheath, or the inner cable? Don't go bending your accelerator pedal just yet....

Depending on how much too long it is, I think I would try to modify(er..bend) the cable bracket on the carb first...lot easier to get to than the cable on the pedal. Or..get a shorter(correct) cable, maybe.
One trick, if you DO decide to do something on the inside, at the pedal....get some small lead fishing weights...the kind that are slotted down the side. Put one on the cable, between the ball end, and the plastic seat that fits in the pedal, then mash it on there tight. That will take up some of the cable. An old trick, but it works in a pinch!

Great idea Joel! Thanks!
On more question for you. the throttle lever above the pedal looks like it's been cracked and welded. I bought a new one to replace it. However the old one has a piece of steel welded to it about 3/16 thick, 3/8 wide, and a little over an inch long. It's not reinforcing a weak or broken spot. Wondering if it's some sort of effort to give the gas pedal a heavier feel?

Hmmmm....hard to say, without seeing it what it might be for, or why it's there. Can't say that I have ever seen, or heard of something like being done from the factory, or as a service update. Can you get a pic?
