Hey there Vette Fans,
Happy Fathers Day to all of you dads out there first of all
Larry, I'll be the first in this thread to admit to putting a set of Flowmasters on my 79. I'm running a strong 327 with headers, 2 1/2" pipes that breathe in to the FMs. I have to tell you I absolutely love them. There is a reason why they are so popular, and I see them on a lot more than the pony cars. Also keep in mind that different motors with different characteristics will produce different sounds - I don't sound like a pony and the fart cans can't touch me!! However, all the advice you've received in this thread is spot on.
The best advice is to maybe hook up with a local club or show and listen to the systems live. Once you've made a decision, the local car guys can direct you to where to either get a system custom made or in the case of a chambered system, shops that will install an off the shelf system you have if you don't feel comfortable tackling yourself. I actually have some friends at a Meineke in my area that did my work. I know them personally from racing in the roundy rounds. Trust goes a long way for me to farm out any work.....Either way, research and your own preference can save you in the wallet in the long run. You may hate the sound of the FMs and love the chambered system or maybe it'll go the other way around. The worst way to decide which one you don't like is because of the way it sounds on YOUR RIDE
!!!
Either way you go, judge for yourself. If you're ever visiting at the Jersey shore, I'll give you a preview of my system. Sweet!!
Good luck, happy cruising - heres the W A V E
Happy Fathers Day All!!

For me I got a soulution to my problem. I had installed a chambered system from mid america and said earlier that it sounds awsome but too loud for my soccermom and yuppie neighbors, so I had flowmaster 50's put in after the chambers. The sound is interesting to say the least. The idle is deep and mellow yet not too loud. The revving noise is quiet but indicates performance. This is great for not grabbing cops attention. What I will do is install exhaust dumps just after my existing chambers and before the flowmasters so that with just a quick crawl underneith I can unscrew the lids off and I'll have back the glorious sound of chambers. If I need to lay low.. I'll plug them back up.....Voila!

Ive seen something made just for this.. my father did this alot.. it is a low deflection angle exhaust valve.. you just reach under the car. (i think there was tool with it for reaching..) and turn the valve and it blocks one side or the other..
with this you can have your exhaust exit behind the car instead of under it...
exiting under it will just make you sound like a redneck who hasnt fixed his rusted out pipe.
and you can run an extra pipe... or just join them back after the mufflers..
unfortunately i dont remember who makes these...
but i remember the cheap ones only allowed you to do either or... the better ones used a variable adjustment flap and you could use both outputs to varying degrees (ie 30% muffler/70% straight pipe)
He put these on a ridiculous 76 Pinto (351C, C6, N50/15's, posi) with a choke cable to adjust the valves from inside the car.
the only problem I remember with them was they rusted out pretty easily.. but maybe someone makes a stainless version now.

my old man would been happier than a pig in manure if these had existed when he still did cars..
this is exactly what you need to have your exhaust "both ways"

here is someone using these on a rustang

The Mitsubishi 3000GT actually used a bypass set up like this INSIDE the muffler. It went though all the baffels, or bypasses some of them. It was a factory set up. Worked well.
WoW Thanks Ben for the site link! That looks great! just a flip of a switch on the dash and I'll have a mean sounding vette to intimidate! Ohhhh shoot a cop on my tail....Flip! quiet and civilized. Wonderful! Did you noticed the ricey neon lights under that guys crapstang! LOL! I'll definitly need to save up for that setup. P.S. Ben I did a dynamic lash and it made a world of a difference. Thanks again.

glad I could be of help..
I dont know why comp would recommend doing a static adjustment without a preload.. makes no sense to me..
cant go wrong with a dynamic adjust on hyd lifters.. messy but effective.
glad it worked out..
the exhaust switch looks cool.. if I didnt have my mind firmly set on side pipes id install a set.... this would be great on a sleeper .
