I've heard the afterburners, and the webmaster is working on getting the sounds up on the website. I'm not sure what they cost. I think Advance and Auto Zone carry them, as well as JC whitney. They are not a direct fit replacement thats for sure. Thats the advantage that Mid America and others have over most of the aftermarket. But most of these type mufflers will work. I think anderson showed them at $42 each. Seems about right. My only problem with some of these mufflers is the resonance they produce. I've heard even from C5 owners that some mufflers make enough noise inside the drivers compartment to drive you insane on long trips. If you want to talk design quality look at the Hooker Aero Chambers. They are super heavy, the internals are fully welded stainless steel with no glass material to burn out, so they won't get louder as time passes. The also have a sound resonance tube to cancel out any harmonics that are created in the case. The case is fully welded with reinforced welded inlets so they wont break apart, get punctured, or allow water to pentrate any of the seams to rust out or cause corrosion. $70 ea is not bad considering what your getting. The Afterburner has a series of pass tubes on the inside that are the same size as the inlet and outlet. Its kind of like a turbo in a way, but what makes it so nice is the fact the case is fully welded just like some of the more expensive mufflers. A lot of mufflers on the market use a rolled and crimped case then the internals are slide into the case just before the end pieces are added and the ends are crimped into place. Crimp designs tend to vibrate and break loose and are potential leak points for fumes, can blow out, and rust out at these points. If your not driving in wet weather then it probably wouldn't matter to most of us. If I was spending the money I would look at the list from the article decide whats more important, quality/construction, sound, performance, warranty, price, rank them in order of importance and then pick what fits your list. I guess all I was trying to do was point out what mufflers performed better. I think what most people care about is the sound! |smile| I look at everything |thumb|

I heard them inside and it was on a built 350. They sounded nice but for what i wanted just a little too loud. My wife and I like to go on long drives and still hear each other or the stock radio.
I do think, as some others have pointed out, that the 50 series is a little "tinny" sounding.
.
I tried to find some sound clips at varous manufacturer's web sites but didn't have too much luck.
Good luck in your search. I know that it is a difficult choice.

I have the 2 1/2 chambered from Mid America. Before we redid the car I had '69 side pipes on it for years. Very nice around town but on any trips of over an hour or so my wife hated it. The chambered is like the best of both worlds. Everytime I hear it I like it more and more. I went to a local Vette show yesterday with the car and the exhaust was a topic of many conversations all good.

Well,I guess my priority at the moment, would be 1.sound,2.performance,3.price,4.longevity...although I keep interchanging the 1st three. If I got them 2morrow,it would be price, then performance, cuz I'm in between jobs at the moment. |cussing|Also,I think I would prefer to have something that "bolts" right in,as I'm not quite ready for anything major.Soon I'll probably be ready to maybe go with headers and a true dual exhuast.I've got about a 1/3 thats not.The pipe is the stock size that was on it...which is what size? And should I go larger, and by how much?,w/o any major engine work. Also down the road..a manifold, cam, carburator. |headscratch| |saluteflag|

Vette(s): 1974 vette t-top,L-48,4-speed,Red with silver interior.Mods-intake,demon carb,electronic ignition,k&n air filter chambered under the car exhaust.SHOW CAR.
I have a 1974 T-Top with a 4sp and a 350.Performance intake w/a demon carb, msd ignition,K&N air filter and chambered under car exhaust.I had dynomax turbo's on for a short while not enough noise I put on Mid America Side pipes way to loud and tinny sound.I took it off the car and they took them back.I then went to the chambered exhaust. The best choice by far.nice rumble at idle, slight roar on the highway not excessive but put it to the floor and you hear a muscle car sound of the 60's and 70's fantastic.Believe me when I say thats the way to go..

Hi Gunslinger, New member as of today. Great web site. Are running any CAT's on your dual Exhaust? I need to change my exhaust on my 1980 L82 vette. I just checked on prices in the Mid America catalog and found single exhaust priced at $400 without mufflers and true duals $230. Thinking of running true duals without cats. Which mufflers are you running with? Thanks for your help!

I'm running true dual exhaust without a cat. Much improved responsiveness. The entire exhaust system is from Corvette Central ($271 plus shipping). They say it's a low restriction system, but I don't know the manufacturer for them. All I can say is I'm very pleased with the sound, performance and costs.

Since my '78 is 25 years old, it qualifies as "historic" where I live, so it's exempt from emissions testing, otherwise I would have likely kept the standard exhaust with cat for now. Since yours is less than 25 years old, you better check your state laws regarding exhaust emissions and whether you should eliminate the cat.

Vette(s): 1974 Black 454 Stingray coupe, turbo 400 tranny, barry grant 750 carb, hooker super competition headers, moves along!
the exhaust on my 74 454 was shot, i replaced the 2.5 inch factory true dual with hooker super comp headers, and true dual 3 inch, WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I am using a baffled type muffler and it must have made at least 40-50hp's True dual and large diameter makes a big difference.
