well, i ended up putting flowmaster 50's on. had a local performance shop put them on. i had them put on chrome turn down tips for a real nice finished look. they are considerably quieter than i expected. the shop had a 350 with flowmaster 40's on but it was too loud for my liking. (my wife likes to drive the car as well).
it cost $300 and they did an awesome job.
my budget is shot for this year....

So far no clearance problems...at least no more than I had before. Speed bumps are still speed bumps and I have to go over them an inch at a time real slow. The guy did a fantastic job on the whole system. The headers are headman and the mufflers ( I 'll call them that even though it sounds like straight pipes ) are from Summit. They are the only ones that do not say glass-pac. The pic shows a polished stainless and a "chambered tube" I have the chambered one. I will have to order an set of "baffles" from summit also. They come in a two or three stack ( pic in Summit shows what I mean ) and tack weld them into the headers. Trust me when I tell ya that these things are just WAY WAY too loud. A person I can trust put them into his mid-year and he claims they do not detract from either HP or torque. (just quiets the whole system)

Hello-
Please tell me more about the chambered exhaust. Did you use the Mid America kit? I'm currently doing a 350HO transplant in my '76, and was considering 'misplacing' the cats and using the chambered exhaust. I've heard different opinions on the sound they make- what are your thoughts?
Any info is appreciated.

I replaced the stock 2" pipes on my '70 with the Mid America 2 1/2" chambered system and the sound is unbeatable. Great rumble at idle, reasonable at speed so you can hear but when you get on it they really scream...very similar sound to side pipes.

I've heard lots of people say that chambered exhaust is very restrictive (like 1 1/2" internals). They may sound good, but hurt performance. Joe

Depends on who's chambered mufflers you use. Gosh I hate telling people things that may make them mad, but I spoke with a very good tech editor with one of the magazines yesterday and we were discussing mufflers. He said he just dynoed some Magnaflows and so flowmasters and both sets cost them 50+ ft lbs of torque and over 60+ Hp. Granted they sound good, but he always tries to find a straight through design. To put it bluntly you need to go to this web link and get the hard facts.

I'm not sure why the tech editor said they lost so much power with the Magnaflows, because they did well in this article, noat as good as the Hooker Maxflow, but not bad. But check out the best bang for the buck Afterburners from flowtech.

I'm new here, and wanted to share my recent exhaust experience so I'm jumping in. I replaced the stock type exhaust on my '78 L82 with a Corvette Central aluminized full dual exhaust system ($271.00 + shipping). The mechanic who installed it for me said it went on without a hitch, and believes it must have freed up 20 hp as it runs so much more torquey and quicker. It also has a great sound. Even with the stock exhaust manifolds it sounds and feels like it has headers.
I am very happy with this system, and that the whole thing was less than $300, a bargain for the quality of what I got, plus the improved performance.

You can get either 2" or 2 1/2" systems. Both Mid America systems chambers are a larger diameter than the pipes themselves making the internal size the same (I checked this out before putting them on the car). The HP difference is obvious.
So Marko,did you hear those 40's inside or outside?You think I ought to get them on my stock '77 L-48? I wonder what those Flowtech Afterburners cost and how they sound,After Shark?
