Hey guys,
I want to sort out my carb. I have a Holley at the mo which I could rebuild. Its just not running quite as good as it should.
Also I have the original Qjet that I could rebuild or I have a 3rd option which I am leaning towards but need some advice.
I have been offered a brand new, in the box edelbrock 1407 carb and a performer manifold at a very good price...almost too good to pass on.
I know the 1407 is way bigger than I need at the moment and would be better matched to an air gap or RPM intake.
Would there be any problems in running this carb on the performer intake with a fairly stock engine. The engine will be rebuilt in the future with new heads and internals.
At the moment it has been bored 30thou over, has a mild comp cams 268 cam and is used only on the street.
If I were to say, money isnt part of this decision...
would you,
Rebuild the Holley
Rebuild the Qjet
or buy the 1407.
And....reasons for your answers please.

I would say,rebuild the Q-Jet,and put it on an Edelbrock Performer manifold,thats what I did with mine,just be careful which performer you get.I used the 2101,with that and the Q-Jet and a low rise chrome air cleaner there is about a half inch clearance to the hood,a high rise manifold wont work ,unless you want to punch a hole in the hood.you can get the 2101 in E.G.R or Non E.G.R. options.As for the Q-Jet they are a good carb,G.M. put them on all there cars,not the most fuel efficiant ones ever made,They aren't that hard to rebuild,just get yourself a good rebuild kit and a new set of floats,any good auto parts store carries them,a couple of cans of spray carb cleaner,and I bought the gallon container of GUNK CARB PARTS CLEANER,it comes with a parts basket inside the can,or use a container and pour the cleaner in it because the carb body wont fit in the basket.just be careful with the cleaner ,its NAPTHA and its potent stuff .There is an article in here written by KSTYER showing the complete rebuild,it's a piece of cake ,check it out ,Thats my $.02

I have had the 1407 on a stock small block with no problem. If I was buying, it would be the 1405 but if its cheap , run it. That carb works fine with the performer intake too.
One if the biggest mistakes people make during a build up is over carbing. I actually had a small block once with a 1405 up front and a 1407 behind it on a tunnel ram. Needless to say the rear one was for looks.

I am with Ron on the choice of carbs there. I would take the Q- Jet over both the others.

I'm assuming you have a small block in your car. While no expert with carburetors, and as much as I like Edelbrock carbs, that 1407 (750 cfm) is likely too much for your car unless you plan on running at high rpm's all the time. A stock 350 should best use a 600-650 cfm carb, the Q-jet excepted, as it's spread-bore design is a different animal.
With the 750 on a stock or near stock engine you'll experience stumbling at take-off, though it will run fine at high rpm's where it's flowing plenty of air. It would take a lot of tuning and even re-jetting to get it tuned properly for a stock 350, and then you'll likely not eliminate the take-off stumbling.
I say rebuild the stock Q-Jet by someone who knows what they're doing. It's still the best all-around carb for your car. If you do replace the heads and intake later on, all it would require then would be re-adjusting it and maybe new jets.
Not to say the Holley or Edelbrock aren't good...I just think matching components to meet your needs is better. I think a properly set up Q-Jet does that better for the most part outside of a car that's raced.

thanks guys...looks like I will rebuild the Qjet and put it on the 2101 performer intake.
I am in the UK so getting a rebuild kit and floats is something I need to source stateside. Can anyone point me in the right direction of which kit to buy?
Its a 75 and the egr will be coming off.
Will do a search for the rebuild article. I have the book by Doug Roe. As soon as I get the kit I will start. Having said that I have a 'new' old stock baseplate so hopefully that will save a little time!
