Vette(s): #1 -1969 Corvette Coupe Riverside Gold, black interior,MN,A/C,350/350,PS,PB,window cranks. #2 -2000 C5, black/black, 6 sp, Bose system & lots of buttons.
I've had the Holley 650 on my car.  My 2 cents......it sucked.  I put it back in it's box, stored in my shed outside.  I replaced it with the Edelbrock 600 CFM and an Edelbrock manifold.  I have the L46, so that combination worked well for hood clearance and I get FANTASTIC gas mileage.  I have to still use the Premium and add a lead additive.  My car has plenty of hp and sounds bad a$$, but I'm not racing it either.  If you go racing I agree with the Demon.

Vette(s): 1972 conv., sunfire yellow, blk interior, blk vinyl and convertible top. Off frame restoration with American Speed 383 stroker engine producing 500hp plus a 200hp NOS system. MSD ignition. Hooker super competition headers with chambered exhaust.

VETTERBOB,

I'm running a 750 double pumper Holley on my 383.  Jets, primary 78, secondary 80. No choke, no vacuum. Timing 36 degrees advance. Spark retard, 4 degree. Never had a problem.

I was always under the impression that our Q-Jets were 750 CFM

Vette(s): Just finished 2 years of Blood, Sweat, & Tears restoring my 69 Coupe. Crimsom Red, 427, vacuum removed, Shot of Steeroids, Killer Lights, 5 Speed, still working on small things but she is back on the road.
Thanks for all the suggestions.  I changed the intake to an Edelbrock when the engine was built.  It is a long block 427 bored 30 over.  The original 427 was shot.  Over the years a couple of pistons exploded and the cylinder walls had missing parts and it had been bored a couple of times.  I wanted to keep a 427  I kept the old Holley that was on the old motor when I purchased the Vette.  It is a 650 with the choke removed.  The power values are shot and it needs to be trashed.  I talked to guy that built my engine and he said much the same as Ben 650 or 750 just depends how much of my foot I want in the carb.  The engine will take the high RPM but running around Orlando there's not much space to let it out not to mention the gas prices.  I have always been partial to Holley so I guess I will stay with a Holley.  They seem the easiest to keep tuned and work on and this is the only carb I have ever worked on in the past.

But he's not running a 350 he got either a 427 or 454 which I calc out to 725 to 750 for a street engine.

675 = 432 (427 + .030) * 6000 * .90 (optimistic) / 3456

isnt the holley street avenger a 675?

sounds like a good match to me if you want to stay holley..

ive heard good things about the street avengers
When i was working at the local speed shop here on Saturdays it was our running joke that we could make so much more money selling 650's in 850 boxes because we always had to castrate a bigger carb to run on peoples engines because they over did it.  Mostly because they had the bigger is better mentality and had p*nis envy because their neighbor had a castrated 850 on theirs.
another problem i have seen a TON of is when people complain about their carb topping out too early..  which of course they think means their card is too small..  The first thing I do when adjusting a carb on an unknown car is adjusting the throttle.  I cannot count the number of people who complained their car had no power, only to find out they had the throttle adjusted where the pedal to the floor only had the throttle 1/4 open.

Well, I stayed with Holley and bought the Holley Street Avenger.  I installed it yesterday and made some minor adjustments I mean minor.  It pretty much just came out of the box and it worked.  I had to adjust the fuel level and the idle other than that it just worked.  I had some adjustments to the throttle linkage and the springs but once that was resolved I was done.  It has vacuum secondaries and electric choke.  What a difference from how it was running before.  I still want to get the fuel set up better but the main thing this weekend was to get it running smooth.

Once again thanks for all the help.

Jim
