I put in an H-pipe just behind the trans cross member. I don't know if it did anything but sounds better.

When I was replacing the exhaust on my '73, I asked about an "X" or "H" cross-over. Two exhaust specialty shops (as well as the speed shop that did some of the engine work) told me they improved HP, but usually only above 6500 - 7000 rpm. Below that they could help the sound, but also created another area for potential problems (leaks, etc.). Hope this helps.

I didn't do it and I wish I had. I have the Dynamax coated headers and chambered pipe mufflers. It's supposed to mellow out the sound and eliminate the vibration at mid-rpms. It sounds good, but it could use the crossover.

An "X" or "H" pipe is supposed to balance out the back pressure from each side of the engine. This allows a better flow and more HP. The sound is much better too! |thumb|
