Got some scarry news today.
Seems that my smog pump's bearing are going OUT and she's makin' this strange sound under the hood. Sounds like a can with rocks rolling around under there!! There's a valve thing that runs to the smog pump and I found out I need one of these hard to find things. Then I find out the part is $1,500 at Midway Auto Parts and on Ebay they are $880!!! WTF??!!! Why is this part so HIGH??!! Does anyone out there know anything about this??!!

I think you need to do what Rich (youstoga) had done to his and unhook the smog but make it look like it is still there.
Maybe Rich will chim in.........................
Luckily, 79's do not have a smog pump. Aren't I lucky? Sorry to hear your dilemma, Miki. Where have you been? We miss your wit! Have a good one!

Hey Mick - long time no hear!!
You can eliminate the smog pump altogether if you wanted to in your car is exempt from emissions...

Man am I bored at work to be on here at 10 am..I am actually on a computer so found this one pretty easy..yes I did make the air pump look like it is still hooked up but the pump itself is completely locked up..I haven't taken it apart yet and see if I could put new bearings in it so this is what I did..I cut the old belt off and stapled it to the air pump pulley..unless you really look and don't see a belt going to the water pump you will not notice it..I think Mike took a picture of it for the CFAC show///Iron82//..you can just remove the belt but I think it looks good with it on there plus it really does nothing to horsepower..

I would look at the salvage yards, several are the same part, I have one off my 87 chevy pickup that has the guts out of it so it's just a fancy pully. You might look at Pace performanc they sell an airpump delete pully. Are they doing the emission test up where you are?

The answer to WTF is "Because they can."However... We have one off a '75. I held it next to the one on my '69 and it sure looks the same. I am sure the casting number is different, but it will certainly fit, and look the same. And the good news is we get $100.00 including brackets.

I tink she needs the diverter valve, Larry, as well as the pump. I've seen those as rebuilts(the valves), but they are not really meant to be used...more for show.
Folks that took all of that "smog crap" off their cars back then are sure wishin they had kept it all, since the prices for some of that stuff is thru the roof now.

What did you do with your diverter valve?

Hey Rich, didn't you have to plug up the smog stuff on the engine also? I heard that if not, you could blow the muffler's off. Don't know if that's true for sure, but I heard that from a guy that used to work on them in the '60's when he first started as a service mechanice for a GM dealer. I was trying to keep this old junker original...............but if one of those valves cost THAT much, I might have to do some customizing!

Can you rebuild them expensive diverter valves (made outta gold and diamonds)? What is Larry talkin' about, Joel?? That price sounds better!
