Hang in there, you did the best you could to help your buddy. It sounds like you asked all the right questions, just someone on the other end was not 100% honest with you guys.

If the rest of the car is in good shape, and it is just the engine issue, I would say around $18,000, max.

If he is able to recoup some $$$ from the misrepresentation he my come out for the better if the latter was his reasoning for the car.
Either way I agree with the others I would feel bad. I doubt that he holds this personally against you. At this point all you can do is continue to aide him through this much like it sounds that you are.
Cosmetically the car is beautiful; new paint and interior, new tires, new top. We did everything we could do, short of flying out to Oregon, to ensure this was the right car. He did not pay for a LT1 car, but did pay top money for a base 350 car. The seller was very cooperative answering specific questions, and they were the right questions. I am hoping they will do the right thing and take the car back or refund a sizable amount of money. I have bought a lot of cars and motorcycles from Ebay and never had a single problem. I even bought my Vette off Ebay with no problems at all. I have certainly learned a lesson on this one. Don't buy it if you can't inspect it.
Thanks

Another place to look for prices is in a back issue of Corvette Magazine. They do market reviews of each generation on a round robin basis. I don't recall how long ago the C3s were written up but I think it was within the last 6 months.
I have to agree with the others in saying don't feel bad about the coaching you did. Short of going out to look at it before sealing the deal it seems you both did all you could do. It seems like they must have been reading the engine numbers from some previous documentation rather than from under the hood.
I found "The Toy" via the internet and didn't see it before walking off the plane in Pittsburgh. I had found a local Corvette restorer through a string of connections and had him do an inspection prior to sealing the deal. His report and my liking the car upon seeing it were pre-conditions of the sale so had it been misrepresented in any way all I would have been out was the cost of the plane tickets and the inspection.
I know it is a hassle now but eBay does have good ways for resolving misrepresentation issues. They don't take that lightly so your buddy should get some dollars back.
btw - the base engine in '70 was the 350ci/300hp. The 350ci/370hp was the LT-1.
I just check the other day on nada and a good driver is, if I remember, around 20000, it say add 60 per cent for LT-1, God I liked that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
70 is a good year due to low production numbers, lowest convertibles made since 62, If correct, have read a couple different reports claiming that the 70 will be the next vette to take off price wise like the 67.
but what the hell do I know

by 1000 bucks...IF THE ENGINE WAS THE CORRECT REPLACEMNNT...that is a 327 in place of a 327 or a 350 in place of a 350 etc...
having a 305 under the hood is NOT a correct replacement...and therefore it will reduce the value by more then the above mentioned
amount...
Been at least 5 years (and prices have jumped in those 5 years) since I saw the 1000 dollar figure...
My 72 is running a 68 327 ...which is WRONG WRONG WRONG... BUT I like it that way...as the 327 runs much stronger then the original...IF I were selling the car I would disclose the difference..BUT I would also tell the would be buyer The 327 is stronger and no way would I reduce the price below the so called 1000 reduction.. PERIOD.
Just this boys opinion... a ZZ4 will go in my 76 when the time comes..
and its another PLUS as far as I am concerned...the NCRS boys can go jump in the lake...LOL
