Have all matching numbers on car the serial number plate starts out right but the last number does't match a 1970 or 1971 the title has 1971 but all the parts motor door panel sticker all matches a 1970 numbers and have been checked by several people to see what they thought they left scrathing their head said everything was a 1970 number. the ribets on the window plate are factory ones. when i put the 194370s followed by the 6 numbers off the motor it matches 1970 and the other numbers that are on the window plate match 1971. but i was told the last 6 numbers on the window plate don't match 1970 or 1971 they didn't produce that many?????????????? anyone else have this problem

Vette(s): 1981 - 59 Beige over Cinnebar leather. Edlebrock top end, 2200 stall w/shift kit, 3:55s, Mufflex maniback exhaust, nice stereo, 16 in AREs w/BFGs
You have to remember a 1971 car could be built in 1970. The model year starts in August of the prior year. If Im not mistaken the Vette line closed for the prior model year in June.  My 81 was built July of 80. Your motor should predate your build. The motor needs to be available for assembly line duty. As long as your VIN matches the block theres no issue. As long as you dont have a deck and a restamp AND Im reading this correctly, your ok

You have a '70 model coupe...

194370S =
1 - Chevy
9 - Corvette
4 - V8 engine
37 - coupe
0 - Last digit of year model (1970)
S - St. Louis assy.

The last 6 digits are the sequential serial #, but...there is a "check" digit there, which is what I believe is causing the confusion...just eliminate the first of those last 6 numbers, and you'll have your actual VIN.
For instance, on my '74, the last 6 are 433177. The 4 was a constant for a couple of years...it really means nothing(for the sake of this discussion, anyway). So, my final VIN(sequence #) is 33177.

Does this make sense?

Why would the title say '71, to me that is strange. Most of the DMVs I am aware of would not allow this to happen unless its a very old title, most of the modern computer systems would catch this IMO. Pictures of the critical areas might tell the tail.

Welcome!

Today's DMV system may catch it but this car was titled a few decades ago.  Unless a subsequent buyer knew what he was looking at, they would probably fill out the title/registration information that was provided to them. If the VIN plate has never been tampered with, the sixth character indicates the year manufactured. Only the last five characters in the VIN are the build sequence. If you are looking at the last six, you are correct...there would not have been that many built. Your VIN indicates a 1970.

I SPOKE WITH TWO DIFFERENT WORKERS THAT HAVE RETIRED FROM THE BOWLING GREEN PLANT . THE BOTH CAME FROM ST. LOUIS THE FIRST MAN WAS THE ENGINE MAN HE SAID THERE WERE SOME MOTORS THAT THEY RESTAMPED,  A SUPERVISOR  WOULD MAKE THEM PUT A NEW PLATE ON THE CAR TO MATCH. THE BUILD SHEET IS WHAT YOUR CAR IS IF YOU ARE LUCKY TO FIND ONE. WE DID OVER THE GAS TANK IT HAS 1970.THE SECOND MAN WAS A SUPERVISOR ON LINE FOR THE CHECKING OF THE NUMBERS HE SAID THEY HAD 7 TO 8 MEN WHO WOULD CHECKOUT THE BUILD NUMBERS TO MAKE SURE THEY MATCHES IN EARLY TO LATE 60 THEY HAD A PROBLEM WITH RIBETS COMING UP MISSING AND WERE BEING SOLD ILLEGALLY SO THE HAD THIS INVESTAGED AND THE SUPERVISIORS WOULD HAVE TO GO UPSTAIRS AND GET THEM AND THE TAGS OUT OF A LOCK BOX TAKE THEM DOWNSTAIRS TO THE PLANT AND PUT THEM IN A LOCK BOX FOR THE NIGHT SHIFT, THAT WAS LATER ON AFTER THE PROBLEMS. HE SAID IT WAS POSSIBLE FOR THE NUMBERS TO BE PRINTED OUT BY MISTAKE BACK THEN.  HOURLY PAID PEOPLE WOULD MAKE THEN IN THE 60'S THEN IT WENT TO SALARY EMPLOYEES LATER ON AND GOT REALLY  HARD FOR ANYTHING TO COME UP MISSING.  HE ALSO SAID GOING DOWN THE LINE THEY WOULD HAVE BUILD SHEETS IN THE CAR ONE AT DASH IF THEY WERE REALLY BUSY SOMETIMES THE GUYS WOULD THROW THEM AWAY AND SOMETIMES THE WOULD PUT THEM IN THE DASH AROUND WHERE THE SPEEDOMETERS ARE IN THAT AREA WORTH CHECKING WE DID NO LUCK BUT YOU NEVER KNOW. ALSO IN THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIVERS SEAT SOMETIMES. IF YOU ARE SITTING IN YOUR CAR AND REACH DOWN ABOUT MIDDLE OF THE DOOR UNDER THERE IS STAMPED NUMBERS ON THE  FRAME OF YOUR CAR HE SAID HARD TO SEE BUT IT WAS THERE. ALSO IF YOU TAKE THE IRE OFF I BELIEVE HE SAID RIGHT BACK SAID THERE IS A NUMBER STAMPED WAY ON TOP OF THE FRAME BUT IT THERE BECAUSE THE LINE HE INSPECTED STAMPED THEM WITH A HORESHOE TYPE MACHINE YOU WILL NEED A MIRROR TO SEE HE ALSO SAID YOU CAN TAKE YOUR FINGER WITH A LITTLE CLEANING SOLUTION AND RUB THERE AND FEEL THE STAMP IF YOUR FRAME IS'NT REAL RUSTY . THANKS FOR ALL YOUR REPLIES. HOPE WHAT THEY SHARED WITH US MIGHT HELP SOMEONE ELSE TO.

You can find the frame-stamped VIN just behind the driver side rear tire, on the top side of the frame. You will need a strong light, and possibly a mirror to see it....but it is definitely viewable.

I got the frame VIN to imprint on a piece of "silly putty". It reads backwards, but you can hold it to a mirror to read it.
