F09 = build date of body (Jan. '71)
The VIN did not contain any specifics on engine size until 1972. There are some differences in the tach red lines for BB cars, and all BB cars had a rear stabilizer bar. The fuel pump line on the frame is different, also. Does the car have a data plate on the center console, to the rear of the shifter?

The data plate is just a small, decal looking thing just below the shifter, where the fiber-optics panel is...

'77-up cars won't have this plate...the re-design of the console area caused it to be deleted. It was used from '68-'76.
Your question was concerning a '71, which is why I mentioned it. The data plates are different from year to year, but almost all have engine size/HP/compression ratio, or size/torque/compression ratio.
