I had my 81 off the road since May. My rearend was in need of a rebuild, the suspension was sloppy soooo.... The under side of the car was detailed, the pumpkin was rebuilt w/3:55s, everything from the pumpkin out to the lugs was redone including a complete brake rebuild (calipers/rotors/pads/hoses etc). Heres what I notice
The suspension rides unreal. I put in a 340 lb mono spring and KYB gas-adjusts along with all poly bushings.
The car stops much more controlled and dead on striaght.
The 3:55s with the 2200rpm converter and shift kit really launches great. The car, I dont know if its faster but it sure feels faster. On the highway, at 75mph shes running 3200rpm.
Long and short of it, the car performs great and is alot smoother and safer. I didnt realize what was missing until it was fixed. I wanted 3:23s or so but we couldnt get em and I wanted the car done. When I recoup my cash I laid out and save a little more, I think a 4speed automatic is next on the list...

I can understand the financial pain - I'm as cheap as they come. But, I look at it like this - most of the stuff I'm doing won't have to be done for another 10 years, at least. Yes, they are a money pit, but you don't have to rebuild a differential every year. If it makes your Corvette better/safer/more enjoyable to you, then it's worth it.

Anyone remember the old series "THE FBI"?
Epilog...
I forgot to mention, YEP totally worth it! I'd do it again in a snap!
