I had the same sound in my old '79 Corvette. It went away when I changed the gear lube and additive. Hope that works for you. My second suggestion was going to be universal joints, but after I re-read your post I saw that those (UJ) were new.

Good luck! Keep us posted!!

I had clunking and grinding noise also. The diff oil was changed along with a bottle of the special GM additive. This helped greatly but I also changed the leaf spring bolts and bushings. You can get bushing and bolt kits that are relatively inexpensive...

After changing lube, drive the car in tight circles, going in each direction. In a very short time the noise will discontinue. This sounds crazy, but it does work. If you still have noise....your problem lies elsewhere.

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.
I had the same problem with my 79 when I bought it. I added a bottle of GM lube, and drove it about 150 feet, and the noise dissappeared, and has never come back. It must be called Wonder Lube.... |thumb|
