Does anyone have the production numbers for the 78 Pace Cars?  A friend just bought a documented 42,000 mile survivor.  Original paint, interior, engine etc...  Unmolested except for the heater hoses, radiator hoses and tires.  The hoses have been replaced with GM NOS hoses.  It is a 4 speed, A/C car.  Any info would be appreciated.

According to Black Book,
1Z87L8S900001 through 1Z87L8S906502

fifth digit varies as follows: L=350ci, 175hp, 185hp
                                            4=350ci, 220hp

The regular 1978s are 1Z87L8S400001 through 1Z87L8S440274

So the eighth digit is the key. 4=regular, 9=PC.

Hope that helps.

Total production was 6502, I believe.
There are some breakdowns as far as how many were 4spd compared to autos, and how many were L82 compared to L48, etc. I don't have that info here, but I'm sure Mike(mkapp7879) or Mark(cilrah) will have more solid info.

The 6502 number is correct for total Pace Car production. As for how many built with certain combinations, there's only speculation. I've heard between 200 and 300 4speeds were built, but no real info on motor combinations with the manual. For TOTAL 78 production, there were about 8000 4speeds, 3385 of those the close ratio only available with the L82 motor, the rest the wide ratio that was standard equipment and NOT listed in any of the option charts. The L82/4speed Pace Cars are the most desirable!

As for other options, almost ALL were standard equipment on the Pace Cars. Only extras were the L82 motor, gymkhana suspension, am/fm/cb stereo radio, cruise control(but not available with manuals), and choice of transmissons(no charge).

For Pace Cars I think the production for L82, 4-speed was 202 units.

Sounds like my friend has a good find. It is an L82 4 Speed.  He has the build sheet and the window sticker for the car.  So it appears that he may have one of 202 built.  I can't wait to tell him.  He paid $20,000.00 for it.  Opinions on his buy.  Too high, great deal or average buy?  I been over the car, it is in really great shape for a three owner survivor car.

If the car is as represented your friend should be very pleased.

I don't really need to repeat what was said above, all true for the most part.  As for the 202 L82/4 Speed combo. I've seen higher and lower numbers, all depends on who you talk to. But as for your friends car, yes he has the rare combo.

I'd say your friend got a good deal if the car is in good mechanical condition.  My PC is/was in excellent condition when I bought it for the same price and I've got the L48/Auto.

Of the 46,776 1978's built, 6502 were Pace Cars. Base price was $13,653.21.

Only 3,385 had the close ratio 4-speed tranny.

12,739 got the L82 350ci, 220hp engine.

Power windows, locks, glass tops, defogger, AC, sport mirrors, tilt-tele, white letter P255/60R15 tires, HD batt, AM-FM w/8track, power ant, dual rear speakers, alum wheels with red accent and convenience group were all std.

You could get the trailer package for an extra $89.00. Only 972 went for it.

G95 was an optional rear axle ratio. Don't know what is was, but only 382 ordered the $15 option.

It's good to see C3's selling for more than their original price.

Gives me hope.LOL
