I don't know for a fact, but I've read (for what that's worth) that when the '78 debuted with the larger rear glass, the spare tire carrier was redesigned for the donut spare to accomodate the larger 24 gallon fuel cell.
If so, a full size spare won't fit properly.

I'll look tonight to see what size I have. I need to check the pressure anyway.

My 78 has the donut spare,I cant put a full size tire in because of the bigger fuel tank,if you have the 24 gal tank it won't fit,I don't think, unless you want to put a smaller tank and a bigger tire tub in

[/QUOTE] I think I'll just keep the donut.

You can, in fact put the full sized tire/wheel in the tub. How else would you get it home if you had a flat?
The tubs are mounted with an adjustable bracket(s) on the front side(s), that will let the tub hang farther down. If you look at the front brackets, you will see two "hook" areas. The lower one(bottom) is for the space-saver, and the upper(top) one is for the regular tire/wheel.
Don't youse guys have owner's manuals?

I looked last night, but it was late and I didn't want to get my tools out of the basement.
I'll try to take a look today to at least see what is in mine. The tread looks like a donut-size tire.
"Owner's manual"? Only look at that as a last resort.
