I have a de-activated or bogus vintage Alpine aftermarket alarm system which probably needs replaced. Looking for suggestions on good, reliable and reasonably prices systems. I realize there are dozens of makers but would like some first hand referrals. I have the mechanical ability to do the installation myself. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.
Someone makes one that operates off of the satellite system. If your car is stolen, you call in and activate a number, and the police can find it in a heartbeat. I'll see if I can find the maker.

Glen, Thanks for the suggestion. (I fianlly got back to the forum to check for answers.)
I think you may be referring to LoJak. It would be awesome to have one but our "old girl" probably isn't a real target. Do you have an aftermarket system in your Vette?

Don't count on it NOT being a ''target''...a few weeks ago...someone(s) tried to break into my '79 in BROAD daylight!! in the parking lot where I work. Fortunately for me..they didn't get in..but I do have alittle ''damage'' from where they tried to pry at the driver's side window and a few marks on the door itself.
Shame that things like this have to happen.

I bought mine from Crutchfield. It has several nice features, good installation instructions, was relatively easy to install, and they have great telephone support if you run into a snag while installing it.
I can't think of the name brand of the alarm system right now, and they probably have more with newer features than they did 2 years ago.
Jim.

That is called LoJack. Just be aware that not all police departments have the capabilities of tracking these vehicles. Besides an alarm would hopefully deter the car being stolen in the process, LoJack must be activated by the owner after it is discovered missing. Too much time frame difference in my opinion.

The only anti theft system I have came from the factory. The horn toot, toot, toot. Kinda of a sorry alarm, but it works. Not real loud either...

I just happened to think about a really good, thrifty, anti-theft system. My son figured this one out. One of his many cars is an S-10, 5 speed, 4.3 L , 96 chevy. He cut the wire to the clutch kill switch, and hooked up an off, on switch, and hid the switch. He and I are the only people who know where it is. If it is turned off, you can't start the truck. The truck acts like it has a dead battery. Do the 4 speed corvettes have to have the clutch depressed before they will start? If they do, a corvette can be hooked up the same way. I'm sure an automatic would work the same way, with the shift linkage switch.
Seems like a real cheap way to stop a thief.

I have Viper alarms in both my other cars. I generally don't leave the Vette alone long enough or far enough out of site to worry about it but I would recomend a Viper alarm. They do the fuel shut off and everything else. Also gives a reduction in car insurance. I have thought about the kill switch for the Vette. Since I no nonger smoke, I think a relay of sufficient current handling ability hooked to the starter or battery and then hooked to the cigarette lighter would be a nice thing to have. Now that I have a garage, it sounds like a winter job for this year along with well, there are too many other winter jobs to mention. If I do hook up this set up, I will post how it works and the correct relay to use.
The clutch in "The Toy" has to be to the floor before it'll start. A previous owner also installed a kill switch that disables the ignition. The motor still turns over, but no spark. The switch also locks the hood so the only way in there would be with a big pry bar. A separate key (a really weird looking one at that) unlocks it. There's no brand name on any of the components so can't offer where to look for it.
