Vette(s): 1971 Brands Hatch Green L48 Coupe Automatic Driver - restored 1995

First time (I think??) in 14 years I had to pull over on the road with a problem in my Vette.  Last night I replaced the exhaust manifold gaskets and removed the alternator for space and messed around with the heater hoses.  Tooling along about 75 I look in the rear view and see a ton of white smoke out the rear and then check the temp. gauge and see it pegged past 250!  Of course my cell phone is dead and I have my 5 year old in the car headed to his 3rd day of school.  So now I am going to be in trouble with his mom as well if I don't get this thing moving.  Raise the hood and find water everywhere, check the hoses, they're OK.  Look over and see a shredded belt wadded up in the corner next the the radiator.  Time to see if I have what I need to fix it.  I have always carried a few tools and I thought I had an old belt in the rear compartment somewhere.  I did.  I also had a new one.  Should have put it on sooner.  It would have been easier but we added the power steering to this car two months ago and that belt has to come off to get the alt. belt on.  It is hot down there as well as tight not to mention I am standing on I-35 with lots of traffic rushing by.  Got it replaced and we get back on our way.  Got the boy to school on time and came to work. I think I need some hand cleaner.

Now I know who to call if I ever have a problem on the road.
Way to go to be prepared.
Now throw in a pair of coveralls and a can of waterless hand cleaner and you'll be all set.
I'm glad I have AAA.

Sux to have a breakdown anytime, anywhere...
Good thing you had what you needed to get it back going. Ya reckon it did any damage from overheating?

I hope I found it in time.  It did have the needle pegged all the way.  Probably wasn't more than a mile.  No new smoke or noise but we are going to check it out more closely tonight.  I'm not in the mood to have to build a new engine this month. 71Shark2007-08-17 10:22:18

But...you may have already "boil(e)d" the engine!

Did it actually dump ALL of the coolant out, or just enough for you to notice, and stop? If it didn't run dry, you may be good...

No.  I put less than a gallon in to refill it.  It also ran at about 165 for the rest of the trip to town after replacing the belt.

Man, you  must have been born under a lucky star. It usually, at a minimum blows a head gasket. Lucky you looked out the rear.
