I'm trying to fit an air cleaner under the stock hood of my 72 convertible. I purchased the same air cleaner set up I am using on my 74. Its a pro form 141-906. It works good with about a 1/4 - 1/2 inch of clearance and I have a 3 inch element. On the 72 it looks as though the air cleaner just touches the hood. If I take the top of the air cleaner and just have the 3" element on it doesnt touch the hood. Now the base measures a 1" drop and I found a base that is made by K&N. It has a 1 1/4 drop. I just ordered it and also went with a K&N 2 3/4 inch element. I am hoping it will give me enough clearance for the hood to close. My intake is an edelbrock performer 2101 same as on the 74.
Now I was wondering what others are using and how much clearance do you have?
Thanks
Rodney

Big difference in the heights of the two hoods....the '74 having the cowl induction hood, which is a bit taller than the stock '72 hood.
That's all I got...

Once I had an aftermarket air cleaner base interfere with the accelerator pump.
I noticed a hesitation when first moving from a dead stop.
So, give it a good look.
I have an open air cleaner made by GM. The underside of the base clears the acc. pump on the carb.
Let us know how it goes.

Just got my new air cleaner base delivered this morning. Took it out at lunch and it looks like its going to work!
I ended up going with the K & N drop base 1 1/4" and a 14" round K & N 2 1/2" air element. Looks as though I will have about 3/16" of clearance at the peak of the air cleaner top just 1" around the hold down stud. The sides look to have about 3/4" of clearance or more. I feel much better now but still dont have the linkage on yet. But it looks like that wont be a problem. Wont know till later this week for sure. but for now I 'm happy!
I'll give all the part numbers I used once I am sure everything will work.

Kewl! Just make sure your engine mounts are in good shape, and not too loose/mushy...if the engine torques up when ya stand on it, it could poke the air cleaner stud right thru the hood....not a kewl sight to see, especially after all the work you put into the car.

Not that it means that much , But they are brand new! As is with almost everything else in that car. I may decide to put a solid link in beside the mount as well. Thanks for the advice. Getting closer, may even decide to start it this week!
