I've been thinking of relacing my fixed mast antenna with a (non-electric) telescoping one. Have any of you done this and if so, where did you purchase the antenna.

The reason for the change is for ease in using my car cover and to eliminate another target to be twisted or bent by the local vandals.

I haven't done it, but it shouldn't present any particular problems. The antenna is by the left muffler, so you should think about wrapping some heat resistant wrap around it...I think Chevrolet put some kind of heat shield around the electric motors on those cars so equipped.

Also make sure the antenna cable and connection will match up, or you may be looking at running all new cable to the radio. You should also run a ground to the antenna for a ground plane because of the fiberglass body.

A second person will help since the outside part has to be held firm while you tighten up the holddown nut from underneath.

Actually installing the antenna is fairly easy. You may have to take the left muffler off for access. The difficult part is running the wires into the car.

but while your running that wire.. why not make it an electric telescoping..

I eliminated my external one and used a amplified antenna that is glued to the inside of the rear window. I glassed over the hole and smoothed it out.(did this before my new paint.)If you are not concerned about factory org. I think it is nice. look hard in my pic to see the lack of an antenna.

How is the reception for AM and FM?

This is what I did with mine just to clean the lines up some when the car is parked. I like the look of a power antenna on the car when it is down.

My reception is about the same as it was with the old antenna. I dont find it hard to get good reception.

Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like the power antenna may be the way to go for the look I want now, but that internal one is nice too.
