After installing a set of platnum plugs, i did a check of my gas pedal. When pressed to the floor i noticed that the carb was only opening about 70%. I always thought something was wrong as i never could hear the secoundaries openning. You know tht loud howl the Q-jets make. The pedal was hitting the carpet. I pulled the carpet back to find much to my surprise ..........more carpet. The PO installed new carpet right over the old carpet. I cut the carpet out under the pedal and with minor some adjustments the carb 100% opens like is should. I'm sure this will do wonders to my gas mileage.

Dumb stuff like that does happen. Luckily you had to forsight to look for the obvious before spending a bunch of money on a mechanic.
When I first got my '69 I drove it for a couple weeks and kept wondering why it just did not perform the way I remembered my old '74 454 running. Since my wife will absolutely not sit in the driver's seat, it was difficult to check linkage travel. I finally got one of my club members to work with me for a couple minutes and sure enough the rod attached to the bottom of the gas pedal was bent and the secondarys were only cracking open. Once teh linkage was fixed, it acted like a whole new car and yep, gas mileage certainly changed in a downward direction but nowhere near as much as the fun meter went in an upward direction

That’s too funny. I have heard that the pedal gets bent after time stopping it from get to full open. People do strange things.

Gary,
How do I check mine (stock QJet). When I press the pedal to the floor, should I see the secondarys open? Mine don't. What should I see?

the top plates are vacumm operated and will only open when running. but its the lower throttle plates that need checking. Hold the pedal to the floor (you will need someone to do this or as i did a 2x4 against the front of the seat bottom). you then can open the top plates with your finger and see how far the throttle is openning. Or with the pedal to the floor move the throttle linkage back by hand and see if it can move any farther back. adjustments can be made on the cable hold bracket and then recheck. be sure there is nothing binding after you make any adjustments.
