........BAD UPDATE: Well, this really SUCKS! Got a call from the guy today (Sunday) and it seems that getting a clear TITLE is a BIG PROBLEM. The previous owner is giving him a hard time and can't get the guy's help. At least that is what he's saying. For all I know he might have sold it for more and I'm out of the picture.
...(bad word)...I had a feelin' it was too good to be true! Supposedly, he says he can't sell it now and he's not sure what he's gonna do. This POOP is no good! I need my $5,000 down payment back.......NOW!

The guys giving you a story.
When I bought my Pace Car from a guy in Indiana, the title was still a previous owner's Alabama title. He had never transferred it in the eight years he owned it. BUT, all his info was filled in on the back of the title for the transfer. I wouldn't take it that way. He simply transferred the title at that time, eight years later. No problem. I assume he had to pay some sales tax, tho. The new Indiana title had the current date for the transfer but it did show the purchase date as eight years earlier. I would have liked to have gotten the Vette with the Alabama title without all the transfer info filled out. As it was, I had to transfer the title to my name in Illinois simply because the seller didn't listen to me and HE filled out the transfer to me. I ended up paying a chunk of sales tax. probably more than the original owner paid!
I really can't see having a problem transferring the title. first to your seller and then to you. It would just be a pain trying to skip the seller, makes him look like a dealer or something.

Sorry to hear about the problem with the title. If the car hasn't been in the DMV system for 5 years, you wouldn't have any problem getting a title, even if you took the car without a title. I have used this company several times without any problem. They won't send you a title but will send paperwork that the DMV will accept and send you a title. Good Luck!!!
I would request the guy give me the title "as is" and make sure you get a bill of sale.
Check with your DMV about buying a car from a non title state. Maine is a non title state for 25 year old cars. Can you get a title in your state with a Bill of Sale from a non title state? I can't believe all the old cars trading hands all the time all have up to date titles? I have a title but it's 2 owners back now and nobody asked to see it.
The guy may have let someone look at car after he agreed to sell to you that offered more $$ and he's looking for a way out, who knows. Sorry to hear it's not working out too good at this point.

Worst case scenario Micki is that you demand a bill of sale. When the guy arrives with the car go straight to the poice station and have the vin numbers run. If everything is good then go to the BMV. You can then file for a abandon vehicle title. It will probally take 6 mos for the title work to come but it will be legal.
You will probally have 6 mos worth of loving on the car to do anyway from what you have told me.Tuxblacray 2007-12-09 19:29:33
