I'm trying, so far unsuccessfully
to verify if the 72 LT1 I have is an original ZR1 optioned car. The tank sticker had disintegrated, the original owner has passed away, second owner says it is but has no documentation, and the original dealer, Appleway Chevrolet has been of no help at all.
All the #s match and appear correct. But there are so many opinions as to what was on one of these cars, that I really need to verify with vin# that this is correct.
Any ideas?

Do you mean one of the 20 ZR1s built in 1972?
Does it have the correct engine? The engine stamp code for a ZR1 in 1972 would have a suffix of CKZ -- and the s/n stamp on the block should match the last 6 numbers of your vin.
See http://www.corvettemagazine.com/2000/january/code2/code2p13.asp for the codes for 1972.
I've heard of build sheets on top of fuel tanks...under the carpet....stashed behind the dash panels....have you looked in these places?
I was lucky enough to get a package from the original owner that contained ALL of the original paperwork, including the hand written sales order, the typed sales contract, the 'protecto-plate' even the window sticker when I purchased my '72.
Good luck....it would be a rare car if you could document it as being one of the "real" ZR1's...

ZR1's had the LT1 engine, M22 heavy duty transmission, HD power brakes, transistorized ignition, front and rear stabilizer bars, and typically did not have fan shrouds. In addition, you could NOT get PW, rear window defroster, ac, PS, PO2 hub caps, or AM-FM radio. If you have all of those AND the all of the appropriate parts are numbers matching, you may well have one of the rare 72's.

ps, the Corvette Black Book has all of this information and you could verify things with an NCRS 70-72 Judging Guide.

Thanks for the info folks. All the #s match. Unfortunately it seems like everyone has opinions on these cars. I've been told the Black Book is wrong, that they didn't have transitor ignition, or that they did. We had NCRS judge the car and it got 99.9. However, they would not confirm it was a ZR1 and folks at the show seemed to go out of their way to question and tell us it is not original.
We checked everywhere - no tank sticker. Dang!
Does anyone know of a registry that might be tracking VIN #s for these original ZR1s?

Unfortunately, the way GM kept records anything is possible. They are finding more and more different parts for c3's. Why else is the NCRS keep coming out with new versions of their manual. I would keep looking to find other ZR1's at shows to verify your car. With GM, Anything is possible!!!!!!
Is your vin a early or late number?
Good luck!

Is the VIN stamping on the M22 trans? Does the date jive? Does it have the upgraded suspension with the 7 leaf rear spring? TI ignition was an option with the LT-1. I'm not certain if it was included in the ZR-1 package or not. There are four 1970 ZR-1's in the 1970 Corvette Registry. Two of these 4 people have extensive documentation with their cars - #08998 and #15562. You will find both their e-mail contact addresses on the '70 Registry database. They might be able to help you out some. ~Juliet
