I agree with all the instructions about photographing , then removing. I am a little torn about laminating it in place, as it is then not original. I lean ever so slightly toward carefully peeling it off with a wide razor scraper, then sealing it in a zip-lock. I definately agree with making a good copy to laminate and put back on the car.
One hint for removing the tank. If you even suspect the sticker is over the strap, cut off both ends of the strap, tape them to the tank, and remove it with the tank. It is a small sacrifice for preserving the sticker.

Lifetime MemberI would also remove it when you get the chance. I found mine but it was too far gone to read. I know some people have found copies in other spots on the car, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that there's another one somewhere. I'll look when I replace my interior this fall.
With the mufflers off, I was able to reach up and remove the sticker on both my 78SA and the white 79.

The 79 one looked really good with just a 1" square hole in the middle of the options section. I was still able to make out everything there by the numbers and surviving wording.
The 78SA was a little worse. Much of the options section was torn up and it was very faded. This on a 1400 mile Vette.
I was still able to "reconstruct" both stickers with the help of some others I had for comparisons. And once I saw what was supposed to be in each box it's amazing how I was then able to make it out in most cases. Made a photo copy of a nice one I had, whited out the info, and then cut and pasted in pre printed words, letters, and numbers.
I keep the raggedy ones in plastic sleeves with a copy of my "reconstructed" one next to it.
I feel that most people buying a nice Vette nowadays would rather see the build sheet protected in a folder, able to look at it, than left on the gas tank to further deteriorate.
As I did have other documentation, window stickers and dealer invoices, I was a little more willing to risk damaging the build sheets than if I had nothing else. Keep in mind, neither Vette is a super high dollar chrome bumper vette with no other documents to prove authenticity.
very recent purchase at BJ had an "original tank sticker" that was affixed to the sheet metal which was cut from the car, framed, and the sheet metal replaced in the car - this preserving the 'originality' of the tank sticker ... yeah right. and there is beach property in Kansas that I will sell you !!
It was a clear fabrication that was being passed off as original !!
