I have removed almost the entire interior in my 70 roadster to repair and restore back to original.

There was no build sheet behind the dash. Where else could it be. If it is under the carpet, which is coming out next, is it under the drivers or passenger side typically? Will it be under the seat or just on the floor in front of the seats?

After 34 years what are the chances that it survived on top of the gas tank?

I have already requested info from the Texas DMV from where the car was first purchasd and owned.

What else can I do to document the car?

The build sheet could be under the seats or carpet. but also after 34 years and numerous owners. they could have been removed. the one on the tank can only be seen by dropping the tank down. And it may not be in great shape. There are other posts in other forums about build sheets. Unfortunately a state DMV is the only place you can go to find info about cars prior to 1981. That is when vinn numbers were starting to be recorded. Soi hopefully you'll get an answer from them. Here's a post from Ron78: "Over the years I have found them in many places in G.M. cars ,in the headliners, inside the bottom or backs of seats,in the spare tire area, under the dash, and under the carpet.the only place Iv'e found one so far on my 78 was on my gas tank, and I clumsilly reached up and tugged on it when I was working on the rear end last spring and half a dozen brittle pieces fell down in my face, the other half is still up there on top of the gas tank "

i found mine on the top of the gas tank, i removed the trim around the gas cap and looked in using a mirror and a flashlight. it was on the right side(passenger). I had to drop the tank to get to it, lucky for me my C3 was garaged and never driven the rain. i got it off the tank 95% complete. nothing behind the dashand haven't had the seats out to look under them, i doubt there would be 2 anyway.

Thanks!

U found it on the passenger side. I guess I can still hope.

The mirror idea is great! I will try that before I decide to drop my tank.

I used a flashlight but could not see anything. I only looked on the driver's side.

Thank you,

Saw the build sheet! It looks like it is all there but I cannot tell if it is readable.

the printing of options is faint but readable. i took it off 1 year ago so its been there over 30 years. i put it in a acid free plastic folder and keep it in a dark closet lying flat between books. if you do find it take lots of pictures before you take it off. many of my close up pics were too blury to read and it was difficult to remove with all the glue hlding it down. i used a heat gun to soften the glue and a wide scraper to slowley remove it. good luck.

Now I have an even better excuse to drop and replace the exhaust so I can drop the tank. The car has headers from a previous owner so I was planning on replacing the exhaust anyway.

My car was originally purchased in Texas. There is quite a bit of dust on top of the tank but the build sheet is clearly intact. I am hoping that the dust may have protected it a little bit.

I will let u know how it goes.

Bill

Bill, if you get at the build sheet to remove, DO NOT WIPE the dust off it. You'll wipe the printing right off too! Mike

How can I clean it up? Will a soft paint brush work?

Thanks for the heads up. I would have wiped it off otherwise.

LIGHTLY dust with a soft brush but don't OVERCLEAN it. Watch closely while you dust. If you can read it through the remaining dust, leave it. I've been trying to find this site I once read about for preserving art and collectables(newspaper clippings, etc.) but only remember that it was Canadian. The worst thing you can do to anything is clean it. Mike
