Topic: Build Sheets
in Forum: C3 General Discussion
At one time there was a lot of mystery where the old build sheets or "order copies" actually were. Rumors of 3 boxcars full of old records and private parties squirrelling them. The general consensus now is that they were destroyed as they had no value to GM.
Sorry Louis

Louis,
Assuming that you build sheet is no longer on your gas tank, there are no copies retained by GM until 1982.
If you are able to move the rubber seal on the left side of the filler neck, you may be able to see if it is there.
I dropped my tank, used a paintbrush to dust it off, and then I applied a clear laminate paper over the sheet and rubbed it until the entire sheet came off in one piece then I sealed it with another piece of laminate. I then scanned it, laminated a copy and glued it to my new tank.

Thanks,
Anthony

Their Reponse:
Anthony,
I am sorry, the build sheets from Corvettes built in St. Louis are not available. Chevrolet did not save any of those. We were advised that all build sheets were destroyed after a period of six months.

This is true, I spoke to a representive at GM who gave me a link to the NCM's order form where you could order a build sheet for any Corvette '81 and up
https://www.corvettemuseum.com/library-archives/build_sheets /index.shtml
There are no build sheet for anything older then '81.

I reached my hand up the drivers side of the tank, felt around, and was able to get it off in one piece.... unfortunately though, it was illegible. You can get a copy of the dealer invoice though. Below is some info that could help:
"The General Motors Dealer Invoice service is now being coordinated and managed by Allied Vaughn, a tier one supplier of GM. As of March 1, 2005, the cost for this service is $50 per invoice.
Contact: gmma.research.com to request an order form.
Invoices are available for the following model years:
Chevrolets since 1977
Pontiacs since 1987
Buicks since 1982
Cadillac since 1980
Oldsmobiles since 1977
GMC since 1976
Fleet and exported vehicles excluded. "
Luckily, I got mine early so the process I used to get it was different and it was free. But I guess after they got bombarded by so many requests they realized they could make a few bucks off of it. Its just a copy, but its pretty neat to have something. Shows what dealership it went to, how much it cost, the options. Mine came from Ashland, OR. I had heard it was from the western part of the US because my uncle bought it from the original owner who was in the military and after it was purchased he was transferred to the Dover, DE base, then sold it to my uncle. I think he drove it cross country too. That would have been a fun trip.

The gas tank has nothing on it. I've had it out for quite some time, almost a year. Nothing there.
I got original NOS 77 GM keys that are blank. 2 sets door/ignition one I was going to use for the car, adn the other I was going to use for a project (cut for the vette). Got my warrenty card NOS never printed on I have the original quick referance guide. The only things I need now are the emblems 1 extra for the project, the orig OEM manual (NO REPRINT), and the manal's bag I really wanted my build sheet, and window sticker. Dale, that research.com link doens;t work.

Well, like I said, the process for me was different. I was just copying and pasting info from somewhere else, maybe someone will be able to come along with a functional link.
Below is some contact info from the same place for Allied Vaughn, don't know if it works... but its worth a shot.

Thanks Dale,
I'll give them a call on Monday.
I guess I'm going to have to get a reprocution sticker/sheet. Is there any website that I could put my VIN # in and get a sure fire response as to what options came witht eh car?

Louis,
You can get a repro window sticker from this site:
http://www.window-sticker.com/vettemenu.htm
You can order them laminated or not. I plan on "aging" the plain one with some tea. It's an old movie trick that makes new documets look much older.
Good luck,
Anthony
