I saw some plans and built a ramp so that I could easily work on the underside of my car. After initial completion, I made some improvements:
I put two big hinges from the appoach ramps to the main section. Pulling the hinge pins is a quick way to remove the approaches and also the hinge provides a secure connection.
I also move the whole thing further into the garage and shortened the approach ramps so that I can close the garage doors. That way I can leave everything where it is.
One further thing I need to work on is some mirrors so I can see where the tires are as I drive up the ramp.
This sure makes it easy to work on the underside.
Here is a video that shows how it works:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4NcvXChD7s&feature=youtube_gdata

Jack, pretty slick. So how are the boxes constructed? could you put a 2x4 side rail on for a feeler guide?
Thanks,

I'm thinking of making a pair myself, but I would make the center of one side removable for access from the side.

I found the plans for the ramps at this web site; http://www.corvettec3.ca/ramps.htm
I made mine out of two 2*6's to reduce the cost. The idea a bout a removable side section is a good one. Just need to ensure the structrual stability will be OK. I find myself under the car on a crawler and using the exhaust pipes as 'handrails' to move back and forth in a quick way.

Very nice Jack. I used to put store bought metal ramps under all 4 wheels in opposing directions (front and back) to insure safety but I had to jack it up to do that and it really doesn't give you that much room.

I built a set of these ramps and left about 4 feet open on the inside of the ramps to put parts, lights etc. I also pull on the pipes to move about under the car. I made mine using 2 x 12's for the top, bottom and interior vertical supports and they could hold a tank. The 2 x 12 construction makes them very stable.

Those boards used for the ramps are actually strong enough? I have horrible thoughts of things happening....

Great idea, but I'm thinking that the main framework could be built in 4 pieces (2 for each side) for easier mobility and storage. As a carpenter that builds concrete forms for a living, the design is solid.
