Vette(s): #1 -1969 Corvette Coupe Riverside Gold, black interior,MN,A/C,350/350,PS,PB,window cranks. #2 -2000 C5, black/black, 6 sp, Bose system & lots of buttons.

Yep, I agree with the chrome bumper thing, as a excellent investment.  I looked at a bunch of vettes (C3's) and found a lot of the 427's, but most of those don't have air.  Having factory air is a plus for resale in my eyes.  I've heard that the 427's are kinda "touchy".  The power sounded so good the hair on my arms stood at attention!  I finally decided to get the 350/350.  350's have been around for quite awhile & they are good engines.  If you want, you can soup it up for a little extra HP, but keep the original parts you take off if you want to resale.

I took a BIG GAMBLE and bought my 69 without driving it.  Crazy, huh??  Well, I didn't do too bad.  There were a lot of pictures.  When you buy an antique car you can count on things going wrong here and there.  It's how you get to know it.  Just go for it and DRIVE & enjoy that sucker!!  If it breaks, fix it and document it.  Anyway, I don't understand what's wrong with your wives.  My problem is that my husband thinks a Vette is just a car.  I tell him that other cars are just cars, but a Vette is special car to me.  There's nothing that compairs with a Vette.  So, I'm a crazy woman that has "Corvette Fever" really bad.

Good luck & go get YOUR VETTE & tell everyone your story.  I would love to read about it.

Vette(s): 1979, 350sb, as my kids affectionately call it "shit brown" Corvette purchased in 1996. 84,000+ miles. Not a show car, but I love her just the same.

I'll chime in here!  While I'm partial to the midyear (64, 65, 66) C2's I went out and purchased a late model C3.  Like a lot of others, my purchase was a visceral thing, and not a whole lot of thought or consideration went into the purchase.  I just wanted a Vette!

If you truly need to "talk" your wife into this...and it seems to me that you are looking at this as an investment rather than a purchase of an icon that you just can't live without (i.e. - I'm not sure you've got the fever)...then you need to take your time and do your homework.

Inspect every car you make an appointment to see.  Most Vette owners will expect you to look at the frame to see if there's major rust or other problems, inspect the rearend for leaks or old bushings.  Is the rear spring sagging?  Do the lights come up instantly when you turn them on, or is there a delay (most likely a vacuum problem), and do they close when you turn them off?  How's the wear pattern on the tires...are they new tires, or original?

With a chrome bumper car I think you'd better make sure that wiper door opens and closes as it should.  I've heard alot of owners on this forum alone say that is a common problem.  Is the interior musty smelling (indicative of a leaky roof, T-tops, windows, weatherstripping, or windshield)?  Has the heater core been bypassed, or not even piped anymore (this reduces cabin heat in the summer months)?  Push on the middle of the windshield at the top near the roof.  If there's a lot of movement you may have a deterioration problem that will cause leaks in those unexpected downpours, which could mean you have a rusted out windshield support bar, and that is not a fun fix.  Most likely the windshield is going to break when they take it out to fix it...I know mine did!

See I could go on and on.  Every classic car had or has it's problems.  Most of them are known by current owners who had to deal with fixing them...replacing this, repairing that, updating others.

Like I said before, if you're approaching this as an investment, then you need to take your time, do a lot of research, and look at a lot of cars!

Now, as to your original question...the chrome bumpers are a favorite anywhere you go.  They are some of the most beautiful Sharks you will ever see!  An investment grade chrome bumper is going to cost you money up front, but I seriously doubt you will ever lose money on it at resale.  Hell, even a basket case, project CB is probably not going to lose you any money in the long run.  But if you're looking for options, I'd suggest looking at the 74 verts (a 454 is a great investment since that was the last year of the big blocks), plus you get the addition of having the only year with a split tail.  The 78 anniversary Pace cars will always be a good investment, and I don't think there were a lot of those that were manu'd with the L-48 engine, but were L-82's out of the factory (more horsepower and torque than the base engine).  Then you have the 82 Collector Editions!

But for the ultimate investment (tongue in cheek) you need to look for the rarest Vette of all...the 1983!

Everyone has given great advice. To add my humble opinion, I'm guess you want a great driver as well as future appreciation potential.

These, in my opinion are what to consider, in no particular order...

chrome bumper
big block
LT-1
four speed
convertible
a/c
originality
condition
condition
condition

There are still various things to change any recommendations. Not all engines were available in combination with some accessories such as automatic transmissions or a/c. If you want a good driver only, base engine models are perfectly fine, but won't gain in value the way other models will.

Many, many C3's that came with big blocks now are sporting small blocks, and many small blocks cars have big blocks under the hood, so do your research and ask for documentation. No one is saying don't buy a non-original car, but they are simply not worth the money an equal condition original car is. That can be to your advantage depending on what is important to you.

The later soft bumper C3's are fine cruising cars, but due to emmission controls and factory de-tuning, generally won't have the fine peformance of the chrome bumper models, but are usually more comfortable drivers as they have increased amenities built in. About the only soft bumper cars that have any real investment potential are the '78 Pace Cars and Silver Anniversary cars, and the '82 Collector's Edition.

There are lots of C3's out there, you don't have to buy the first one you look at. Make sure it's the right one.

Vette(s): Frederick County Corvette Club (Maryland) Tan 64 365 Hp Conv 4 sp Red 72 4 sp Conv ..running a '68 327 Blue 76 Coupe L 48 4 sp White 79 Coupe L 82 auto Silver 98 Conv, 6 sp 35th Anniv '88 vette

Well ...what can I say....

BUT to answer (with somewhat out of date figures as the latest buying guide I could find is the one published by Corvette Fever in 2002....)

Appreciation rates for the 68 thru 72 C3  in 2002 were   from a low of 4 percent  up to 11 percent....   NONE went down in value...

The soft bumper 74 thru 82  went from a worst case "depreciation of 5 percent ...(the 74 coupe)...to a best case appreciation of 5 percent ...(the 77 coupe)...   8 specific models went down and 7 went up most
changed value by 2 or 3 percent..

Does this mean a damn thing.... LOL...hell no...

I own 64 72 76 79 & 95 Corvettes...

From a return on investment view point... (not my thing) I could sell my 76 for about 10 grand... I paid 3 grand for it in 1992 and have "dumped" close to 9 grand into it over the years  (13 years)....  just doing the math means I would LOOSE $2,000 bucks if I sold the car
today.... WOW that thing cost me about 150 bucks a year to own...EXPENSIVE DAMN CAR....

You want to do the math on the 95 which I purchased brand new
for close to 40 K ....  or  do the Math on my 2001 Truck  which  I also
purchased new... or my wives Mini Van (purchased used in 99) ..

its all about SMILES per miles in my case...and even my 95 was a "good" buy from that standpoint...

In short.... no matter what you buy ..you will NOT be HURT down the road when you sell it...

The chrome bumper cars will always be worth more than the urethane bumper cars.In considering a chrome bumper car 68 -72 doesn`t matter just buy the best speciman you can.And enjoy the hell out of it.

I did go see mine, but it was in a C3 Vette warehouse and several cars
around it did not run and couldn't be moved for a few weeks (and it was
the storm season here) so I bought mine without ever driving it, not as
crazy as VETTERBOB (you live on the edge my friend!) but gave me
nervous sweats until I got it home 3 weeks later!!! Have never been
happier.
