I need to pick the brains of the more informative vette owners. I have been tinkering with my newly aquired 1980 model and was going to tint the rear window but noticed that there is a plastic liner. I am just curious as to what it is for?. Also I wanted to know if an 1981 carburetor is interchangable with the 80?, everything appears to be the same with the exception of one vacuum port at the top { rear } on the 81 but not on mine, also is the electronic device which sits at the front pass side the same or interchangable?. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi, welcome to the best Vette forum on the webie!!
Not sure about the carb's as my 82 has TBI's, but that rear window plastic liner sounds like an aftermarket tint insert and should come right out for easy cleaning... at least that is what I remember the ad saying.... No idea on the electronic device?? maybe post a picture.
If you plan on doing any of the maintance, repair and restoration, you should get a 1980 Shop Manual and the Assembly Manual (AIM) for that year - they are worth their weight in gold! Best prices are found on eBay.

Thanks for your reply, love the color of your car.

The electronic connection is for the air/fuel solenoid. Yes the older carb will run and work fine, but the disconnected solenoid, and disconnected TPS, throttle position sensor, will make the computer wonder what is going on. In turn it will light the check engine light and set a couple of trouble codes. This will put the computer into a failure mode, and cause it to run very retarded or at base timing. You won't like the result.
If you really want to do the change, use a vacuum advanced HEI distributor from a 74 to 80 engine. Then disconnect the computer/
Bit why do you want to change the carb?

Dennis, I've been using the plastic tinted liner on my '81. It's specifically for reducing the heat of the sun. With glass T-tops there's a lot of sun coming in, It gets a little warm. I forgot which outfit I got it from. It was $100 and after I installed it, it didn't seem as dark as I had hoped but I don't regret it.
